Oil Temperature

Featured Replies

Hi chaps,

Thrilled with my new Scout and having a play with the gadgets. I have a question for the technical gurus on the forum.

I now have an oil temperature gauge - but no idea what to do with the info.

I'm thinking - below about 80C then treat the engine as cold, and if it goes over 110C then take it easy.

Does anyone know what the normal operating range is for a CRD140?

I know oil is tested at 100C for viscosity so assume this is around the normal operating temp.

Les.

I would say be gentle till it passes 90C. I have a petrol and it to moves around 95-103C on normal ride. I've had it up to 116C on a very twisty mountainous roads 1st/2nd gear fully loaded.

145 deg C is the point VW say you should back off / reduce the load on the engine.

Dont confuse oil temps with water temps. Fully synthetic oils are good up to about 200 deg C. You need to get your oil above 100 deg C regularly to boil of any water content. On really hot summer days, going at 95mph fully loaded on the German autobahn in my Alhambra Tdi I regularly hit 125 deg+ for sustained periods without any problems.
