Redundant number plate screw holes - protection needed?

Featured Replies

I've just bought some new plates as mine were super manky and really detracting from the car.

The ones I've took off were screwed on but I'm going to stick the new ones on with double sided tape. So that will leave me with holes in the bodywork that can't be seen but are open to water ingress. Any advice on what I should do? Would silicon sealant be ok? I'm not concerned with making it look perfect (as will be hidden behind the plates) but want to prevent any rusting.

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry personally.

And you can get specific number plate adhesive pads for fixing the new ones on. You've correctly identified that it's by far the best way

eBay's usually a good place for them. I usually use 4 per plate and they're usually a couple of quid for a pack.

To make sure they wont rust then really you need to get some paint in the holes first (on the bare metal), as for sealing them with silicone sealant, it wont hurt, but some electrical tape would be just as effective IMO.

Perhaps firmly placing one of the pads over each hole would also do the trick also since they are usually water tight.

Thank you for all the advice

Get a number plate frame maybe a brisky one, then use the screws/holes to fix the frame, pop the plate in then no need for sticky pads!
