HID Kit for my vRS

Featured Replies

For those that have a HID kit fitted, where did you buy it from and how much?

Been looking at a few sets on ebay not sure the quality would be all that good.

Thanks

Make sure you don't drive anywhere near any police with them on (which in Moray, should be pretty easy from what I remember from living up there!) You may pass an MoT with them on, but without self-levellers and washers, they're illegal in the same way as a towbar is on the vRS, due to a lack of type-approval for aftermarket kits...

You pays your money and takes your choice!

And projector headlights. Which IMO is the biggest issue. Headlight washers and self level system I think is a bit overkill. I`m perfectly able to wash my lights and set light adjustment myslef. BUT its the actual projector headlight that give it the OEM look, and stops people having a problem with them. One day i`m gonna try and get hold of some OEM projector headlights. Anyone know how much form skoda?

Matt

You'll end up with huge amounts of scatter with an HID kit as you won't be using a projector headlight, as previously mentioned.

It's not recommended; as such the output isn't concentrated very well, so you don't get the main benefits of a better quality light output in my view. Plus you'll annoy/blind/inconvenience other oncoming motorists.

On the OEM projectors, I seem to recall them being nearly £300 a piece! Worth a question to Jorily on here, or ask a local dealer.

I could cope with that, if they looked OEM with the right bulbs in.

Thanks

Heck of a lot of cash for a light upgrade though, £600 plus the HID kit??

The OEM xenons setup was only a £500 option when new...

It is, even more so knowing how much they were as a option. :'( I`v messaged jorily about a price. There seems to be no more VAGCAT to get a part number from so i`m only gonna have another argument in TPS if i try there. I would love them, it`d be after all the important stuff is done on the car, but i`d see them as worth having. There`s a set of "projector" fabia lights on ebay, with a ****ty DRL in it too, which is £300ish. Not sure if they are LHD models tho

Matt

I asked Lummox once what it would cost to PROPERLY retrofit Xenons to a standard car and he quoted me £1000 and that didn't include getting the front bumper painted.

There is a humungous amount of work involved in retrofitting these.

You need;

2 Headlamps

2 Bulbs

2 Ballasts

1 Rear axle angle sensor

1 wiring loom adaptor

1 5l Washer bottle kit

1 Front bumper with cut-outs for washers

2 washers with caps

1 washer hose kit

and about 10 hours labour to fit and I was quoted another £100 to paint and fit the bumper. If you look at it like that then £1000 doesn't seem so unreasonable.

What was fitted at the factory for Xenons was standard in most of Europe so the parts are relatively cheap and easy to come by (apart from the RHD headlamps). A scrappy in the Czech Republic offered me a complete set of parts bar the lamps themselves (including a factory Black Magic bumper) for less than £200 if I could somehow get it to the UK, which I couldn't unfortunately.

Oh how I love factory xenons...

Ah, that sounds even better. £1k for a full setup, can flog the old bumper for few quid too!

Matt

Aaaahhhh gotta love my xenon's

My heated seats are sooo lovely too! And the cruise control.....

.... Heaven

You won't be saying that when they fail - which with my car being a 'keeper' was why I didn't tick those boxes!

Funnily enough 5 years and 70k on and they all still work!?

Does this also mean my 3rd rear headrest will also fall of shortly? :p

Nope, I think it means someone's gonna T-bone you now and write your car off :p

No, it means I looked at the cost to buy, the benefits and the cost to put right before I decided not to get them. Hence, I have side airbags and passenger airbag deactivation, but no other options. I didn't get HIDs or heated seats 'cos they're a pig to fix; I didn't get cruise as I don't think I've ever been able to drive at a steady 70 anywhere in this country due to traffic; I didn't get the third headrest, as I don't know enough famine victims for my back seat to be a realistic proposition for three passengers, and; I didn't get a sunroof, as the car has aircon and I couldn't be doing with the cut in headroom! Also, I got an aftermarket CD changer rather than the OEM one because it was about half the price...

So there! ;)

I bought my car as is with about 500-700 quid factory options and about 4k+ mods :)

For 6.5k bargain

I would have had the factory xenons and the ESP if I had been able to wait for it to be built, but I couldn't - hence I have the CD changer, the airbag deactivation and cruise control.

I miss crusie control, you do realise it can be used at pretty much any speed?! Not just 70? I dont think most of the options are that likely to fail tbh, none of it is massively complexed. Sure your not just a bit tight? (maybe scottish?)

Matt

I am scottish and wish i was tight!!

Cruise is a god send

The xenon's on the fabia are more for show (not that good)

Xenon's on my old focus st-3 on the other hand were out of this world!!

Wouldn't be without cruise, but that's not really got anything to do with this topic ;)

2 of my 3 Fabias have had xenons - they've been worth it in my book and worth the extra hassle tracking down examples with them fitted. I found them a worthwhile upgraded over standard halogens, even with uprated bulbs like X-Tremes and Nightbreakers.

Suppose it depends what type of driving you do though, and at what time of day :)

re. the cruise - obviously I know it can be used at any speed, I just don't remember the last time I was able to drive at a constant speed here in the UK, due either to traffic, or to the nature of the roads I'm often on. Could have done with it in France this Summer, though! As for being tight, component relability is part of my job, and I don't fancy the bill for a new HID element when the time comes!

I was only messing ;) Surely an element isn't that much? If they last 5 years, and cost £35 to replace, that's not that much more than normal bulbs?!

Matt

You're probably right, TBH, but then I've always had a soft spot for the old Volvo Torslanda with its low-tech uncoolness - maybe it rubbed off on my choice of options!

Anyway, back on-topic...
