Longest car waiting lists revealed

The Audi A3 Cabriolet and TT Roadster have the longest waiting lists in the UK, with a factory order car taking until April 2011 to arrive.

In fact, Audi models take the 'top' eight spots on the list for the longest new car lead times, with the new MINI Countryman sitting in ninth place.

The long lead times of many of the UK's most popular cars is allowing some dealers to charge VAT at 20 percent, even for cars ordered now. The additional cost of the tax rise can add hundreds of pounds to an average family car.

According to used car price guide Parker's, buyers are unnecessarily being subjected to the higher VAT rate - adding a significant 2.5 percent to the price.

However, both Parker's and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) are urging buyers to make sure they don't get stung by the extra cost.

According to the SMMT, as long as the car is ordered before the January 4, 2011 increase a buyer should pay VAT at the current 17.5 percent rate. That's regardless of the delivery date.

Parker's Editor Kieren Puffet said: "dealers don't pay for cars until they are delivered to the dealership. If they are turning up after 4th January 2011 they will try to pass the extra cost on to the consumer. As a result, we urge new car buyers to haggle over extra VAT charges."

The cars with the longest waiting times and their first delivery dates are as follows:

Audi A3 Cabriolet April 2011

Audi TT Roadster April 2011

Audi A4 February 2011

Audi A5 Cabriolet February 2011

I would want that in writing from the dealer that the customer doesnt get stung for the extra VAT, if the car is delivered post 01/01/2011

Same here. Unless the SMMT will stump up the difference.
