Replacing rear pads and discs

Hi,

Planning to replace rear pads and discs soon. I already have the pads at home (Mintex), but looking at the discs I think I should replace them too before chucking a new set of pads on.

Couple of questions - euro car parts suggest either Eicher or Pagid brake discs - any recommendations? I guess Pagid is the "better" make? But will Eicher be ok too?

Also, the Haynes manual suggests replacement of the guide pins etc when replacing pads. Is this strictly necessary?

I would remove the guide pins and regrease them if necessary, and check the condition of the rubber gaiters on them (replace them if there are any splits). I'm not sure if the diesel rear calipers are the same as the 1.8T petrol ones but on the VRS the guide pins have a habit of seizing, or the handbrake mechanism seizes.

Dont forget to get a piston wind back tool for the rear calipers! :thumbup:

Got one of them, just hope that the attachment fits the caliper! It's the laser tool with the type 1/2 attachment.

I think mines a laser one & it was fine when i replaced my rear pads & discs on my mk1 octy vrs.

I have just replaced mine and reused the guide pins (12 or 13mm) but i just used some lock tite (tight?) when doing them back up. The carriers are 8mm hex (on the mk1 vrs). Just make sure you wind the piston(s) in fully, i didn't and it caused me problems! I also found that the handbrake was very slack (8 notches to fully engage) but that sorted itself out after a couple of days? back to four clicks now. Enjoy. (oh and remember copper grease)

You can adjust the handbrake with a spanner (think it's 10 or 13mm open ended)

Chock the front of the car, release the handbrake and jack the rear up so you can see the brake calipers.

Remove the covers from the drinks holder / handbrake housing so you can access the adjuster nut on the handbrake cable.

Use the spanner to turn the adjuster nut, keep checking the handbrake levers on the rear calipers and tighten the nut until the handbrake levers are sitting about a millimetre off of their rests on the caliper.

Now drop the car and apply the handbrake, you should find it only takes two or three clicks up the ratchet before the handbrake is fully on.

Would you consider buying used discs from a car being broken? Obviously they won't last as long as new ones....

There's a couple of mk1 octys being broken in the Parts for Sale section, just wondering if it's a big emoticon-0145-shake.gifemoticon-0145-shake.gif
