oil filter removal 2.0 TDI

Featured Replies

Hi,

I’m in the middle of doing my first DIY oil change on a 2.0l TDI.

Oil drained and 32mm oil filter cover unscrewed. Wanted to check on the next step as the filter body seems to be impossibly tight against the inlet manifold; to the point that no matter how I wriggle it, I can’t find a route by which the filter will come out.

Do you have to prise the plastic cover off – or do you just force it past.

Advice appreciated as it’s bonnet up in the drive at the moment.

Thanks

The 32mm plastic cap will pull off the top of the filter (it's designed to). Remove the cap, leaving the filter where it is, when the 32mm cap is off and out of the way you can then lift out the paper filter element.

Thanks for the promt reply. How hard do you have to pull on it; or does it come off quite easily?

Job done - bonnet back down.

Just to reflect as a 50 something who cut his teeth on keeping a raft of Cortina’s and Capri’s on the road, the instant forums of today would have saved me no end of mistakes.

Perhaps I don’t know where to look, but a library of 'how to’s' would be invaluable. I realise that many are there if you search for them, but pulled together would be even better.

Glad it's all sorted.

It's a shame the forum's search facility is so bad. I think a dedicated 'how to' section for each part of the forum would be a great resource.

As another 50 something who started on Mk 2 Cortinas & Mk 1 Escorts at least they would struggle on without a raft of warning lights or falling into limp mode & sending you to the dealer, there was also room in the engine bay to work on it, in fact almost enough room to climb in & shut the bonnet :giggle:

Your's quite right about how much space you had to work on the engine. I started with a Mk2 1300 Cortina, and on reflection the engine was so small in the bay that it was quite a reach across to do any work!

On the how to's, the standard is set by an excellent one I followed to fit a towbar - and I'm sure there's more, but can't always find them.

Other issues you can find with the filter on the 2.0 PD140 is that if the manifold is hot, then you'll find it a right pain to do and also that some filters (inc different version numbers of the OEM ones) come out of the lid easier than others.

removing the oil filter on 170 is a different thing !
