MK1 vrs 'exhausty' noise on auto choke only..help

Featured Replies

Hi there all,

Onto our 3rd skoda in this household so thought it was about time to sign up to this site in the hope of some craic and advice

As above you will see I ve got an issue with an 'exhausty' noise coming from the inlet manifold/egr system area when the car initially runs on auto choke (20v turbo 1.8). It disappears as soon as the revs drop to normal idle, hence it is very hard to isolate. The car drives normally. It is definatley not the exhaust. With it stopping when the idle drops, I think it is something in the EGR system. My garage replaced a worn through short vacuum pipe (2 pipes together if you know what i mean) but this has not sorted the noise.

Anybody got any ideas??

cheers

Are you talking about a extra sort of exhaust note at start up. That is normal as the Secondary air system kicks in at start up and forces slightly higher engine revs for around 90 seconds then drops off and goes to a std idle.

I followed the instructions posted above by pauldazzle on fixing the secondary air intake pump around a year ago. I have to say that since doing this the pump has been running great with no "jet engine" noise since. Although I still get a fault code occasionally registering a low pressure, but hey its not affecting the car in any way so I just clear it and forget it lol. I had previously replaced the pump but very soon after this it started going noisy again, I would recommend saving the money and repairing it.

A quick question while we’re on the subject.

My vrs misfires occasionally while the secondary air pump is running… is this common?

I should add that I’ve found a split in the Y shaped PCV hose that connects to the crankcase (it’s being replaced 2mrw), I suppose this could be contributing to the misfiring.

That pipe is common one for causing rough running so you should find it improves when changed.

And the code should stop bothering you
