vRS Fault Codes and Big Problems, Help!

Featured Replies

I've had my vRS about 2 months and the engine light came on after 2 days and has been on ever since pretty much.

I had the car scanned yesterday using a fault code reader and these are the codes that came up....

16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor - Range/Performance

16795 - Secondary Air Injection System (B2) - Incorrect Flow

16396 - Intake Cam - Advance Setpoint Not Reached (Over-Retarded)

Now the car is running a Motech Map (circa 210bhp) forge 007p, Jabbasport induction kit, blueflame cat back exhaust and more importantly a set of AUQ piper 285 Cams.

With regard to the speed sensor my cruise doesn't work, so I'm guessing the sensor on the gearbox is funked which isn't too big of an issue. However the other two are.

When the light is reset, the car drives mint, fuel economy improves, albeit slightly and just feels nicer to drive at speed. But after a steady motorway blast the light comes back on again with the same codes. Also the car seems to breathe heavily and the 007p/filter seem to dump during slight accleration when the secondary air pump is running just after cold start.

The car also has a boost issue, with overboost upto 24psi (holds 24psi if the boost is feathered in) and if hard acceleration from low revs the boost peaks at 24psi and quickly drops to 12psi ish. (Turbo fitted 2k before I bought the car (I've done 1800 miles so far) - turbotechnics supplied so not a cheap second hand unit either)

Anyone got any views or input into possible issues relating to the latter two codes as after searching there seems to be alsorts of crap that relates to these.

Now the car is booked in at R-Tech next wednesday for a full rolling road data logging session, but I'd just like to see if anyone has experienced these problems before.

what turbo was fitted by turbotechnics??? 24psi on standard k03s is not good...

identify this and this will help us

p.s the second fault code is not bad just means the secondary air pump prob has a broken rivet and can be fixed very easy.

p.s just seen it has uprated cams when where these fitted???? as this is probably the problem if they havent been mapped

cams are not a good mod on 1.8ts thats why they dont get changed

nick at r-tech will sort you out buddy one of the clever guys on the scene at the moment top top bloke and cracking maps get him to do you a map

Hi mate, it was a standard spec KO3s, rang them using the reference number and they confirmed it was OE spec.

The cams were fitted around 70k (just turned 91k now) when the belts etc were done and a new head gasket was done as well by a place called VAG-TECH if I remember correctly, got all receipts somewhere upstairs.

Since I've posted I've been looking at the SAI removal along with all the N249/N112, catch can and VAC/EVAP mods so I might get all these done when I know exactly what I need for each mod.

I've read that the cams are supposed to be a no no on this engine, didn't realise when I bought the car as a mate of mine has a TT with a similar set of cams and a Hybrid KO4 turbo thats making 350bhp+ with no issues (obviously it has loads more mods and custom map etc) but no issues relating to running cams.

Seems I've got a knack for choosing cars that are a pain in the ass!!!! lol my last vRS was a bit of a pain at times!

he would be the first person to run 350 + on a hybrid k04 does he use jabb'a rolling road lol

lol maybe, thats what he reckons its pushing, I think it was all done at a place called backdraft motorsport northampton way I think, he could be talking *******s lol and by the sounds of it he is. Its frigging quick tho I know that.

I know that my little KO3s shouldn't be running 24psi, would imagine constant boost at that level will funk the turbo rather quickly as well. Whats the safe boost level on a KO3s?

18 psi is around the safer side on a KO3s on a good Map.

24 is way over the good limit.

Ah crap that's not even close. Would an incorrectly fitted or adjusted actuator cause it to overboost as the turbo was fitted by a nationwide autocentre. Definitely not my first choice for fitting a turbo on a performance car!

yep not like the old days when a actuator can be adjusted for a bit more power these you should not adjust as it will cause above issues

dont worry nick will sort it buddy
