wireless Printers

Featured Replies

My printer is on it's way out so I'm in the market for a new one.

I've seen a wireless printer that I'm quite Intrested in. It's a Printer/copier/scanner with Fax

" Does the printer need to be connected to a Phone line or is the Fax sent by wireless ?? "

All depends on the model.

Most will require you to connect via USB cable to use the scanner function.

I suspect many will provide the fax feature via software, and send faxes via some kind of web-based service.

None of ones I've seen recently have included built-in modems for faxing.

The worst feature will be naff driver software, with a memory payload of about 256Mb or worse.

The lexmark jobbie we have in our office needs to be connected to the phone line to work as a fax machine.

You will need a telephone connection for the fax side of it to work.

Correct. The fax function is completely separate from household Internet or the printing and scanning functions.

If you have fax software and a fax modem on the PC you could use the wireless printer as a scanner to simply scan the document to the PC before faxing it but that sort of defeats the purpose.

Wireless is not Bluetooth. That statement is probably incorrect.

A wireless printer uses 802.11x wireless protocols and will require (in most cases) a wireless router to be present to allow communication between the printer and the Ethernet network that the PC is on.

Some wireless printers also have Bluetooth to allow devices like mobile phones to send images to the printer but that is an additional feature not a basic feature.

Watch out if you are buying a printer/fax machine combi - You will need the telephone line for the fax side to work.

The printer itself if it's wireless will need you to have a wireless router. Bluetooth would only be for mobile phone handset > Printer for example.

Edit: Beaten to it. Balls.
