Engine temp coolant sensor

Featured Replies

Hi, checked my car yday with the scanner as the EML had come on. Turns out a lambda sensor and a eng temp coolant sensor are to blame.

What are the purposes of these two things and how much to replace and what would happen if not replaced for a while.

My coolant was finished so I got that drained and replaced with g12++.

the lambda sensor controls emissions and fuelling so with a lambda sensor gone the car can run rough, idle poorly, perform terribly. If the car overfuels for too long you can get what is known as cylinder bore wash but that is an extreme!

Eng temp sensor basically as it says on the tin, senses the engine coolant temperature. This can make it look as if your car is over heating and can also cause all sorts of dodgy running problems due to ignition advancing.

As for running without replacing I can't obviously be mystic meg but I seriously doubt (touch wood) running until you can get it sorted will be catastrophic!

Lambda (bare in mind this is just one, think the octy has 2 lambda sensors so make sure you have the right one, as this can cause serious damage) - http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_1.8_2004/p/Car-Parts/Body-and-Exhaust/Exhausts/Lambda-Sensors/?710443305&1&2e80fd7f4297d824fbe73f986952951a48209147&LAMS

Hope this helps!

fair bit of dosh! I'd ebay it but could trust a 2nd hand one?! might have already gone

Dont do second hand stuff usually so will just wait until my bank balance allows me a bit of liberty.

CTS does the fuelling too

If you look around they are quite cheap

10 mins to replace too

I would do that before doing the lambda

Was it the pre cat lambda or post cat?

As the post cat is an oxygen sensor , and the CTS being faulty can be the blame on that

I don't know, think it said 02 will have to check again though.

02 would probably refer to oxygen, replace the coolant temp sensor and see if it all goes!

Yes , as it could be picking up on the CTS overfuelling

Remember to clear the fault when the CTS is replaced , then check to see if it has gone

have you cleared the codes and then checked back later to see if any have re-occured? Stored codes at any given time could be historic and not currently occuring, so may clear and not return.
