I have an '09 Elegance Estate, in the fog light unit, there are two bulbs, the fog lamp itself and another larger round bulb, what is this?

They are Daytime running lights (DRL). They become a legal requirement for all new cars from 2011 or 2012; until then they are optional.

I think you need to get them activated by the dealer through the VCDS then you can turn them on and off through Maxidot or by performing contortions with the indicator stalk:

Without Maxidot:

switch on ignition but don't start engine

within 2 seconds pull up the indicator stalk (to headlight flash position), hold it there and indicate right - hold in this position for 3 seconds until you hear a "ding!!"

same to switch off but indicate left.

That is the theory - I tried it with mine and got the "ding!!" but no lights :-(

As they do not appear in the Maxidot menu then I guess mine are not activated in VCDS

Agreed. Many recent threads, so search for DRL . Many set up options if you have a decent dealer.
