Anyone know whether 6th gear is the equivalent to 5th on the non 4x4 ?

I agree - although my 4x4 is the petrol version I find that 2nd is virtually a waste of time it's so short you may as well forget it and stick it straight into 3rd.

I find that 6th knocks about 500rpm off at motorway speed.

Look like a marketing gimmick to me.
