stops completely. I have started running the engine for ten mins before i go anywhere and it appears to have done the trick but i would still like to know what it is

when was the fuel filter last renewed?

it's a very stange symptom tbh, i would check that all the relays are secure, there's nothing i can think of which is time related which would cause this to happen

interesting.. gasket failure or split hose possibly?

if its when you are starting from cold and jumping straight on the D/Cway.. this puts a lot of stress on an engine! the rapid heat and stress could be causing a small crack/leak to open up that maybe wouldnt with a more gentle warmup

Blocked vent in fuel filler cap perhaps, causing vacuum in tank?

thanks everyone for responding so quickly, gonna pop to the garage n mention these things you suggested. lets hope its not 2 serious or expensive! many thanks

ok dies your ca have a rpm counter on the dash or a large clock? if it has rpm counter try and notice if the needle just drops down as if it has switched off or if it stays showing engine rpm when it cuts out (before you push the clutch in to coast to a stop)

this will tell us if the engine ecu is still on and recieving a signal from the crank sensor or not.

does it start straight up again once you have stopped?

I used to have a 'T' reg (1999) Skoda Felicia with the 1.3 MPi engine, and it had exactly the same fault as you describe - I got to know almost to the exact spot on the road every morning where it would cut out, and could actually dip the clutch, turn the ignition off and back on and restart it to continue without having to stop it was so consistent!

It was just like someone had actually turned the ignition off when it died, all the dash just goes off like you've turned off the key. I also found like you if I ran the engine for at least 10 minutes before driving off, it never happened. It seemed to be related to when the engine reached a certain temperature while warming up.

Anyway, the dealer had it and tried a few things out and traced the problem - there is a sensor on the inlet manifold - right round the back, near the big black plastic intake for the heater. It gets damp in it and the contacts corrode. They pulled it apart, cleaned all the contacts in the plug and socket on the sensor, and the problem went away for about 6 months... when it starting doing it again I unplugged it and yes it was damp and dirty inside the plug/socket again - cleaned it out and problem curred again. Sold the car before the problem returned again.

I would suggest from your description its the same thing, and certainly worth a look as its a lot cheaper than some of the other potential things listed by others!

Hope that helps,

Cheers,
