Using Columbus to watch video

Featured Replies

When I had my last Superb the Columbus was limited to SD cards with a max capacity of either 2 or 3gb (i.e. about half the capacity of a std dvd).

Now I see that the latest model can read SDHC cards up to 32GB. So where as previously it was easier to use dvd's for their greater capacity (and AVI recordings burned to DVD would play just fine on my old car - I used to watch Star Trek episodes quite often!) , now the SDHC option looks more attractive.

The question is though, does it work? Has anyone loaded video onto an SDHC card and tried playing it back on the Columbus? If it works, what format video did you use (MP4, AVI, WMV or other)

I'd assume it probably does work, but it would be nice to know before I buy an SDHC card in advance of the car coming.

Thanks,

Mark.

According to the handbook:-

"Only MP3 data and unprotected WMA data can be read from the SD card. All other data is ignored."

Also says that if SD card is inserted with no audio data stored on it, then SD key on touch screen cannot be selected.

Which suggests that although SDHC cards can handle video perfectly well, the Columbus has been set up to only read audio and not video data from the cards. Shame.

You probably also need to add support for new video codecs for the video from SD card should make sense. As far as I can tell, the columbus only handles DVD-video, witch means that other formats would have to be converted to work.

Yes probably, and not a task I would relish even though I know how to do this. It's bad enough setting up internet connected computers to enable different video formats to play. I will have a look at the viability of sd cards when the new car arrives (I still have a 2gb card left over from last time). If I find out anything useful I'll post it here for others to use.
