Water Pump

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a skoda 1.9 TDI 55 plate elegance model.

When I bought the car the timing belt was just changed at 80k miles. Now the car has 105K on the clock. I do about 25k miles a year mainly motorways. However, the water pump was not changed and I do not know if it is a metal propella one or a plastic propella on the water pump ( I am guessing the car is on teh original pump).

Just need advice when to change the pump and I know it would be to change all the timing belt etc at the same time. I was hoping to get it changed at aproximately 140k miles (would this be to late).

Advice please, in a dilema at the moment !

Thanks

80k is too long really for the first cambelt change, although now it's changed it will make no difference (should be 60k / 4 years, which I guess you know if you're looking at 140k). Water pump failures on the 1.9TDIs are far less common than on the 1.8Ts, which was the engine that started the advice of fitting a new pump every time you fit a new cambelt.

At the end of the day, it depends how long you plan on keeping the car. If it's less than 3 years or - say - 80k, then you'll have to change it once anyway. In that case, you might as well do it sooner rather than later and sell it before it needs the work done a second time. If the car's a keeper, though, it gets a bit harder to advise...
