Octavia 2010 L&K Windscreen

Featured Replies

Not sure whether this was actually revealed in a previous the post titled AutoWindscreens - I did quickly trawl though the 4 pages.

I have a 2010 L&K - at some stage Skoda have deleted the top tint on the windsceen, which I actually find really useful in cutting down glare, especially when the sun is low.

Now I have a big crack in the screen, Time to get a replacement!

So, get on to Autoglass, tell them that I have a 2010 Octavia and that I need a replacement top tint windscreen.

Job booked in, fitter turns up only to tell me he has the wrong screen - it has a top tint, but as I have rain sensor, the mirror will mount too low down and leave wiring exposed from the headliner! (As oserved in OP early post!)

He was very helpful and said he would have to re-book the job and would research other screens and see if he could find a top tint version.

Bottom line is that the depot then phoned me and said they would have to order a screen from Skoda dealer against my VIN no. which means I won't get a top tint screen!

Does anyone have any further info on whether a top tint screen might be available for 2010 Octavia with rain sensor?

I am almost considering accepting the original top tint screen, (providing rain sensor position is the only issue) and then sort out sleeving the rain sensor wiring afterwards.

John.

Will your VIN not have the tinted screen coded to it - just like all other options the car was built with. Just because it's no longer supplied as standard doesn't mean they can't supply you one...

The problem is that the car was supplied without a top tint screen - if they order a new screen as per my VIN, it is going to call up a screen without Top Tint as per the vehicle build!

Incidentally, so much for Autoglass getting back to me on Monday - now Friday and nothing more heard from them; maybe my job was just too much trouble :-)

John.

Sorry you aren't making any sense?

Are you saying that the current cracked windscreen doesn't have a top tint on it but you want the replacement one to have one?

That seems pretty clear (!) But I presume the 2010 windscreen size and rain sensor position are the same as on our 2006 L&K, which has a grey top tint. I could PM the enquirer my VIN & order against that?

No they aren't thats what his problem is, the boss sits about 2" lower than on the 2010 models.

As for the OP, Autoglass are never goign to replace a windscreen that you never had. If you want a top tint, that wasn't on your car they will fit it, but will want you to pay for it. Your insurers will only pay for a like for like replacement

Thanks all for your replies.

I have decided that I will have the earlier type Top Tint screen, accept that there will be some wiring exposed and sort out tidying that myself with some sleeving.

I do understand that replacement is on a like for like - but the issue is that I am the customer and I am asking for a Top Tint screen and of course ultimately if there is a price difference, then I will have to consider that.

But, first off, I was just trying to ascertain the availability!

Incidentally, with our fleet insurance cover, the windscreen replacement excess is £250 :'(

John.

Just gone through the same process with my 2 month old Octavia Elegance, also with top tint and rain sensor.

Big crack on the windscreen after being hit by a stone, so rang the insurance company. AA fitter arrived and put a new screen in. I was at work at the time and had left my car at home. When I drove off the next morning, I noticed that the rear view mirror was lower than before, and that the wiring between the mirror housing and the roof lining was exposed.

I drove to my Skoda agency, and saw that the new Octavias have their mirrors mounted slightly higher than previous models.

So, next day, fitter arrives with a second windscreen, saying that this was the latest model they had. It was clearly wrong as well, as the rear view mirror patch was below the tinted area, rather than half into it. He rang head office, who rang Skoda. It would appear that MY2011 Octavias have the mirror mount slighrly higher (having looked at the cars, I could have told them that!).

Glass company is now acquiring new windscreens from Skoda, and mine is being re-re-fitted on Tues now. In slower time they will manufacture their own version, as they do with other windscreens.

Trust me John you don't want to do that. Its not just an issue with cosmetics, potentially it is an issue with electrics. electrics directly linked to your wipers. A stretched or broken wire will cause your wipers to either randomly come on or not work at all. in the case of the latter, imagine driving home one night and it starts raining but you have no wipers! enough said. should you get damaged wires, it is not a cheap job to get fixed either, with neither the ins co. or autoglass liable.
