hello everyone..first time owner of a y reg octavia 1.9 TDI 110 ASV engine elegance..question is do these models have turbo?how will i know if its working?what symptoms if its nearly broken?asked these questions before but need more advice..thanks a lot guys and take care..

Yes.

There are number of ways you can tell if the turbo's boosting. If you go somewhere quiet, turn the stereo off, open the driver's door window, and accelerate from about 1200 to 1800 in as many gears as you can legally, you should hear a whistle build and decline as you accelerate, change... This is the turbo spooling up and down.

The most usual "turbo failure" on this engine is for the VVT to get stuck in the "high boost" position due to it getting coked up in very gentle driving. When you accelerate hard, it then doesn't "relax" into the low boost position at high engine speed/throttle, so goes into "limp home" mode, accompanied with a Check Engine Light. This will then cancel when you turn the engine off. This might be cured with an Italian tuneup, but really needs the turbo interior cleaning. You don't usually need a new turbo if this happens.

A blown turbo is likely to be accompanied by one or both of a James Bond smokescreen (and associated high oil consumption) and a complete lack of power!

Yes, the 110 TDI has a turbo.

It should kick in from about 1500rpm and give a nice smooth delivery. With the windows down you should hear the whistle noise reflecting off houses if you drive down a road.

sticky turbos will cause limp home mode (logged as overboost fault in the ECU). Other issue that could cause a lack of "turbo" could be MAF, n75 valve, worn vacuum hoses, etc.

The CEL does not always come on when limp mode is engaged. Pretty sure I have never seen it in my multiple years of limping.

The clagging up of the VVT isn't strictly a failure, but yes it likes a bit of exercise.

But once it had got too bad, exercise does not help, and the only solution is a clean.
