Well these last few days have put it to the test and wow did it pass with flying colours. Coming from the Sorento to the Superb, I wondered how it would cope. I reckon it's a whole lot better.

-11 and snow/ice coming from Peak District to the East Riding at 1am on Sunday morning. Car felt like it was on tracks.

Thick snow here today and again, whilst everyone else was sliding about, the Superb just took it all in its stride. Very impressed

Only thing is, it fills you with so much confidence that you've got to remember that it's still dangerous out there.

Oh, there is a downer. I had to get up early to take my OH to work at 6:45 'cos her MX5 will not get up the very (very) slight incline on our drive

i also came from a Sorento - i had BFG All Terrain tyres on it for this time of year too - the Superb is Great in the snow, altho i have fitted it with winter tyres - it can accelerate almost as quick in the snow, as it can in the dry, and could be dangerous, but the sorento could corner better in the snow.. i do keep thinking about how low it is compared to the previous...

Aye.....note to oneself. Remember, after owning 2 Sorentos in a row, you can't go off road now.

Why did the Sorento's go?

Mine went as i had a steering rack, (£1,502.00) and a gear box (£2,986.00) within 4 months of each other, and all before 70,000 miles - and it was a manual!

Fortunately, both items under extended warranty....

New sorento didnt prove value for money, compared to the Superb...

Guys,

I know that Skoda have just made available a DSG version of the 4x4, but only with the 140CR engine. Presumably a version for the 170 will follow, but who knows when...

Simple questions then: have you been content with the manual and / or would you have gone for the 4x4 with DSG if it were available in the 170? I've been very tempted with the standard 170 DSG on test drives, as there is so much power and it feeds in so smoothly. But I cannot have that AND the 4x4, so it's got to be a compromise either to go with the smaller engine or stick an order in now for the 170 4x4 with manual. I live in the south, so do not have the conditions you've had to cope with just now, but we have French friends in Grenoble and intend winter visits. I shall also use the car as a tow vehicle.

Thoughts?

Thanks

@ ukcruiser.

Company vehicles, so they go at 3 years anyway. Driving an 1800 mile round trip to France and back a few time a year, we wanted a more refined ride.

First Sorento was bottom of range ES and was fine. On the strength of that I got top of the range Titan. Worst car I ever had for faults.

Gearbox at 17K.

2 x starter motors

Intermittent failure to start (nothing at turn of key) which took dealer weeks to find. Was a short on the ignition barrel. (3 low-loader trips to dealer)

Speedo went bananas (dipped 20mph when slowing down). Eventually fitted new speedo ( which re-set tacho to zero but did not clear fault)

Torque on demand sensors faulty which locked up wheels when turning. (1 low-loader trip to dealer)

Cruise control intermittent fault.

Driver's seat electric motor failed.

I could go on................

I traded it in 4 months early with 2 warranty jobs on-going.

We have a house in Aveyron, which although only 90 miles from the Med, can have short but severe winters. (We were there in Feb with -16 and lots of snow and ice.) We drive down at least 3 times in the winter. Also have a boat there which needs to be put in and taken out of the water. So it had to be a 4x4. The Superb fitted the bill nicely, Its first trip down is Boxing Day.

Very happy with the manual (except for the slight clutch problem I've mentioned in another thread) but would have gone auto if it had been available.
