Think you need to check whether your washer pipe is still connected and not leaking water all over your wiper motor and boot lock.

Water and electrics don't mix very well.

Common problem across the VAG range I'm afraid.

Had exactly the same problem, wiper was groaning and coming on when it felt like it, stripped the panel off the tailgate and took the cover off the motor, the wiring was soaked so it must of been shorting. The washer seals looked like they were perished and water had leaked in. There was dirty greased up wet gunk from the leaking seal, i used a hairdryer to dry the wires, cleaned it all up and spray greased the mechanism. The wiper has now sped up and doesnt groan, not to fussed about the washer, just know not to use it.

I had a similar thing happen to a mkiv Golf which was caused by the washer pipe splitting where it goes into the rear wiper assembly. Washer fluid was getting into the electrics in the rear wiper & also the tailgate lock. It sounds like the same thing has happened to your car. You'll need to take the trim off the tailgate to get to the wiper & you'll probably find a leaking pipe. Spray some WD40 into the recess for the tailgate latch & that should stop the warning light coming on.

I had this problem with the rear wiper on my mk1 vrs & when i removed it & stripped it down it was full of water!! i dried mine out etc & it lasted about a month so i replaced it with a 2nd hand one & it was fine after that!.

Yep as others have stated water ingress is the culprit there.

Eventually the internal tube that carries water from the washer bottle gets corroded and realeases water inside the wiper motor asm.

Then it is bye bye wiper asm. Drying want fix it as the internal pipe is corroded so will just come back leaking.
