Handbrakes?

Featured Replies

Anyone else felt this, in all seriousness?

Whilst releasing the handbrake after standing, sometimes for many hours at sub-zero temperatures, it seems to need a "push" down to the normal position.....

I wondered if it was iced up, and perhaps had NOT disengaged fully?

Otherwise every single experience in this Arctic world called Wales-in-a-Yeti has been blissful - even on Dunlop Sport SP 01 bog standard tyres. Yippee.

But what about my handbrake, yeti people?

I noticed mine was a bit "sticky" the other morning, and being as it was -11 I put it down to it freezing on. Seemed to release all right. The one on my Freelander used to let go with an almighty bang!!

Baa

mines been fine at -16......my last car a ford focus did same from new every winter..

Think yourself lucky, on my Peugeot 306 the handbrake froze on yesterday and this morning, handbrake lever works fine but the rear wheels were locked!

A bit of gentle forward and reverse finally freed them :giggle:

It is a "problem" that affects thousands of cars, so don't worry about the Yeti doing it. either it is the actual cable freezing, or more likely the rear shoes/pads sticking to the salt/rust/ice. In general a little bit of "persuasion" soons releases it.

Mind you, my next door neighbour has a Smart and his hand brake froze the other morning and he drove all the way up the street with his rear wheels locked before they released.

There is a simple cure.....................................don't put the handbrake on!!

Pads sticking to discs so quite a common trait.

A little easier for those of us with autos's.

You've got Park.

I've got 1st or reverse.

Not really a problem!

I need to remember this then for when London gets the next snow (or for when I'm in Edinburgh over Hogmanay):

1. Lift wipers up.

2. Don't use the handbrake and park in P only.

I have a vague feeling there might be a service bulletin related to the handbrake, might be worth mentioning to the dealer.
