Yeti 170 or Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi to all.

I have a VRS Fabia and i am looking to move on. I am 6 Foot 5 and 22 stone so getting a bigger car. I can not decide between a Yeti 170 or Octavia VRS so some help would be gratefully received. :smirk:

The obvious questions are... what do you do with your car and what do you want it to do?

I had a 2ltr tdi Octy vrs and absolutely loved it, but when it came to the white stuff falling last winter the Octy was totally useless in less than an inch of snow, so I traded it in against a 2.0ltr tdi 4x4 170 Yeti elegance, which has been an absolute godsend over the last month. Had loads of snow in this part of N Yorks and the Yet has coped with everything.

Had no problems driving twice to Paris and back during the year, the second time with a full car and a roofbox and it was great on the motorways, smooth and comfortable and quite economical cosidering it had the box on the roof giving about 42 mpg at motorway speeds. The Yeti is better in my opinion for long distance driving than the Vrs as its more comfortable and smooth running although I find it slighty less economical than the Octy.

Don't think you should have any problems driving it, ther's plenty of leg room and the seats in the elegance are a good size.

Re: accomodation

I'm 6ft and 18 stone + and the Yeti is a heck of a lot easier to get in and out of and there is more room in the driving position.

My son is 6ft 4in and had plenty of headroom when sat in the Yeti, more than in the Octavia.

No comments to make on performance.

Drive both, then decide. Don't leave it too long though - only two days left for you to take advantage of the VAT free deal on a new Octavia! You could spend some of the saving on winter tyres and then you'll be fine in the snow.

Apart from the added space available with the Yeti, you might find that the ability to accelerate away in the wet without spinning the front wheels somewhat of an advantage (only what I've heard - not driven an Octavia vRS).

The 4x4 set up provides incredible road holding, especially in the wet. It is nothing short of superb when compared to my Fabia vRS - rolls less round the bends and roundabouts as well and surprises many by the way it accelerates out of corners.... emoticon-0105-wink.gif

The Octavia can be had for quite a bit less than the Yeti (with the vat free deal, anyway), though if you spec them like for like, the price is a lot closer.

We have both and I'd say the differences are that the vRS is faster, more economical, has a bigger boot and handles better, whereas the Yeti is more comfortable, has bluetooth and mfsw as standard, has better traction in slippery conditions, looks more distinctive and just feels right.

On the motorway they're both relaxed when cruising, though the Yeti's fuel consumption increases quite noticeably above about 75mph, but the vRS has more road noise in general (particularly in the Estate).

Both have been reliable, the Yeti (12,500 miles so far) has had its headlight controllers replaced (known issue), does have a creak from the rear doors and the passenger airbag light illuminates intermittently (needs to be looked at). The vRS (6,000 miles) has not had any issues. Neither have had any DPF issues either and the Yeti does do a lot of short, around town journeys.

If I had to choose between them, I'd probably take the Yeti for it's all round abilities and it's stronger residuals, but I'm sure you'd be happy with either.

Have a look at both with particular reference, considering your size/weight, to ease of getting in/out and general driving position; the Yeti has a few more inches 'shoulder room' over the Octavia that will be useful.

In thinking of the Octavia vRS I presume you are considering, as with Yeti, the CR170. It may help you to know that this, the vRS, is available with DSG (automatic) whereas in Yeti you have to accept the CR140 engine if you want Automatic.

Thereafter; they are both excellent cars, and the choice will be yours.

You will definitely fit better in the Yeti.

In about 2-3 weeks I will have a Yeti TDi (albeit a 140CR not a 170CR) and I will have a vRS Octavia (TSi not TDi) that you can take out for a spin and sit in, which will give you a good feel for the car.

170CR engined Yetis are extremely rare as demo cars, you're best bet is to drive a 140CR demonstrator and try and find someone perhaps on this forum who is localish to you who can take you for a spin in their car to give you a feel of the performance.

Also bear in mind waiting times for Yeti 170CR will be longer than an Octavia TDi vRS.
