intermediate oil changes

Featured Replies

I was just wondering what people's views are on this..my Mk1 Octavia VRS is on 10k intervals and uses 5W 30 Castrol Edge.

I don't have a massive knowledge of oils but I have been told that with a good fully synthetic oil, 10k changes are fine and it is overkill to be changing it say every 5k?

Now to me, there is nothing bad about having clean oil running through the engine.

I'm thinking about this from a financial point of view, is it pouring money down the drain. What are people's views?

The edge stuff is fully synth. Skoda recommend only I believe a semi synth for the 10k/yearly services and the fully for 2 year/20k

I do mine once a year with Mobil 1, so every 8k or so. 10k will be fine for you too.

The more often you change it the better, and like you say the only thing holding you back is the cost of it.

I've changed mine today after 7k miles, and I've always used Castrol Edge 5W-30. 5 litres (big bottle + little bottle) cost me £50 from Halfords with a trade card (costs £62 without trade discount).

If you do lots of short trips then change it more often, if you do mainly long trips then you can run it a little longer. I'd say anything between 5-10k miles is sensible. Also depends on state of tune, driving type and climate.

My dad always used to say to me, What's cheaper, a gallon of oil or a new engine.

Castrol Edge 5W30 is currently on offer at large asda stores, £30 for 4L or £10 for 1L bottles.

...And National tyres do an oil/filter change for £31.50 for Edge 5w30.

Cheers for the replies.

My car is standard at the moment other than a Forge 007P DV. I do a 35 mile each way commute, not in stop start traffic.

When I first got the car at 30k miles from there up to 60k I have had intermediate oil changes, then servicing at Awesome.

I have been using national for oil changes but i had a slight problem with them where I turned up to be told they don't stock Edge 5w 30 because it is not a common oil. Agreeing to go to a branch 30 miles away being told it is booked and them having no knowledge of me. I was generally mucked around by them and have had no responses to any letters I've sent, so I won't ever use them again.

I think for me I'll be leaving it to 10k intervals.

i do mine every 6k with semi comma oil seems to be fine and i can get 6 L for 11 pound and oil filter for 1.58 so oil and filter less than £13

Change mine every 6months, do about 8k a year, fresh oil regularly got to work out cheaper than engine rebuildemoticon-0144-nod.gif

Changed mine today,i use shell helix 10/40 semi synthetic as my mate gets me it for nothing i just buy an oil filter.I do around 9k a year and change the oil every 6 months religiously
