will this work?

Hi guys,

as some may know I have a small problem with my vRS gearbox after only 91500 mile.

I have managed to source another box all being well. What I would like to do is get my box looked at and sorted out with either a Quaife, Peloquin or Wavetrac LSD. and this

0.72 5th Gear for 02A/02J Transmissions

For the 02A/02J gearboxes found in G60, Mk3 VR6 and all Mk4 models, we offer a tall 0.72 ratio gear pair. Again, these are Factory gears, assuring high quality. The stock fifth gear ratio in a VR6 or G60 is usually 0.84, so this taller pair drops a healthy 14% off your rpm for the same speed. Comes with two new Factory gears.

Now from the way I read it this will mean that instead of doing 3000rpm at around 75mph it will bring the rpm down a few hundred and improve MPG on a long run while making the top speed higher?

Now I have also had a thought about getting a reasonable 6 speed diesel box, stripping it out and putting the 5 gears from our vRS boxes in it and using the 5th gear from the Diesel box?

can this be done even?

From what I can remember the petrol 6 speed and the 5 speed are the same top speed? only the 6 means you need to change more?

In gear speeds are approx @ 7k limit:

02M (petrol)

1st - 32 mph

2nd - 56 mph

3rd - 87 mph

4th - 112 mph

5th - 138 mph

6th - 162 mph

02m (diesel)

1st - 55 mph

2nd - 88 mph

3rd - 125 mph

4th - 155 mph

5th - 180 mph

6th - 180+ mph

That would give you the same performance as the vRS has but with the added bonus of a nice cruising gear for motorways.

I blatently dont know how these things work but seen as the sight above provides replacement gears I kind of thought it could work.

cheers mate, but he is using a std TDi box as he is driving a 420+bhp beast lol.

for what I have in mind for mine I will never be looking at that kind of power. Max I am looking for is 260ish with a hybrid K03s later on I hope hence why I would like to "customise" a box lol, Doesnt have to be a tdi box but it would mean that all the gears would be there.

I think it does need a 6 speed tho as the 5 in the vRS are nice ratio I think, just needs one more to drop the rpm when on the Motorway. specially for all the vRS drivers with remaps of 250 lb ft that will cope with it.

on a std 180 car it prob would be too much but most have been remapped so would be a nice bonus for MPG?

just put an lsd in and leave the gearing the same it works and works well

you need to look at bigger specs when you get into bt car i.e steve sweedish des etc etc running large power
