I have a klunking noise on my VRS - not side specific but over any bump and from the front end of the car. Bottom ball joints were looking ropey anyway, so I put new bottom arms (FAI) on both sides this morning. The klunk is still there, so these are now eliminated. What can it be?

It klunks if you rock the car side to side, but not up or down, or front -back.

One neighbour reckons it could be the bolts on the bottom arm not tight enough?? But I ddi them as tight as possible with airgun and checked by hand.

Brother reckons it could be top mounts on the shocks - but it klunks the same when either side goes over a bump etc - not side specific.

Anyone diagnose this, or put forward suggestions?

Only other thing I thought was the gearbox mount??

Anti roll bar drop link worn or roll bar bushs that hold bar to subframe maybe, carnt be that hard to find vrs suspension is quiet simple really

got same prob and many more. i changed anti roll bar bushes. it was good for a couple of weeks then went over rough ground and it was worse than ever. went back to supplier and found out all there 21 mm batch of bushes where packed wrong they had 23mm bushes in the 21mm packs. when i did finally get 21mm bushes it still knocks. apperantly its because paint as worn away on roll bar. so you can get 19mm ones or i got a piece of rubber about 2mm thick and cut it to width of bush and slid it inside the bush. every thing was grand past mot with advisory anti roll links need changing. i'm struggling to get the right ones though as they seem shorter. been advised need audi s3 if you dont want to go skoda dealer.

Yeah front anti roll bar bushes :( go poly bushes swap all bushes for these saves a lot of ****ing about in the future

I had the same and it was the wishbone bushes. Could also be a snapped front spring as these are a common fault but would probably be side specific but worth checking along with everything else that's been mentioned

Hopefully getting it on a ramp today to find out which it is. Its just annoying. ARB bushes are only £3 each so thats not too bad, drop links are £12 each so hopefully its one of them. The springs arent snapped - checked them yesterday.

have you tryed the top mounts ?

Have you checked the exhaust as it passes through the cross member? I have an 02 VRS and I had a similar clunking noise, the weld on the exhaust had came apart and splayed out the flange which knocked on the cross member. I fixed it with a large jubilee clip no probs since.
