Cleaning sealant off an alloy?

Featured Replies

I've got a chip in one of my alloys, about the size of a large orange pip! I plastered it with sealant but now I want to touch it up with some silver paint and lacquer. What's the best stuff to clean the sealant off? I've got white spirit and APC. Will either of those clean it sufficiently to get a good base for the paint?

Thanks in advance for anybody's help!

A strong mix of APC first and if your feeling frisky then White Spirit is similar to AS Tardis so you could be careful with that but a harsh APC shoud bring it off, what wheel sealant is on there?

Thanks for your help! I've got FK1000P on there......numerous coats! I've got Megs APC. Should I use it neat? It's a bugger cos they haven't been kerbed. I think it was done when I had to have a new tyre fitted after a puncture just before Xmas. I cleaned the wheels the other day and found what I thought was a blob of gunge on there. I flicked it with my nail and a flake of paint has come off!

If it were me I'd cover the rest of the wheel to prevent protection being lost on the rest of it, then use Tardis on the offending area. That'll strip it down.

Or yes, APC neat if you have that. I'd go over it a couple of times. Then clean it down, dry, and apply some touch-up paint and then lacquer. Then leave overnight or enough time to allow that to dry properly, then pop some sealant back on.
