Missing CD changer magazine

Hi. I've just brought a Mk1 Octavia TDi and there no magazine in the 6 disc CD changer. I've pressed the button on the radio to switch to CD but I get no messages on the screen. I was expecting 'no disc' or 'no magazine' or at least the radio to switch off. Before I buy a magazine does this seem like a funtioning CD player? What would/should the screen on the radio say when there's no magazine in the changer?
