Connecting PC to TV using HDMI

Featured Replies

I think I know the answer to this but want to be certain.

My cousin wants to connect his PC to his TV using HDMI. The PC has a HDMI port on the graphics card but what I'm wondering is what will happen to the sound? I know HDMI transmits sound too but how do I go about setting it up? I just want to confirm what to do before he starts drilling holes in walls and buy a few meters of HDMI cable. (Computer is in the next room)

Depends what graphics card is installed.

i think most ATI cards do it but with nvidia you may need to have a cable installed inside.

Best to find the model and do a google search.

Why not put the computer in the same room as the tv and use a short hdmi lead just for testing purposes - or bring the tv to see the PC!

Better to test before drilling.

I think I'll have to just to be sure. I ordered the computer for him about a year ago (Dell) and can't remember what card I specced.

I attached my brothers laptop to my TV with the HDMI cable the other week and the sound was through the TV and no need to adjust anything.

Yeh laptops are usually configured to do it anyway but like I say not all graphics cards are able to do it straight away.

Most ATI card since the first HD series ones will do it out of the box.

The computer is only 6 months old so I'm guessing it should be fine. I'm hoping to down there next weekend to try it. Let's hope it's straightforward
