Rusting Hubs

Featured Replies

The wheel hubs on our Yeti are rusty. Our dealer says they all are like this as they are serious and Skoda give them no protection nor will they treat them under warranty. Usually the rusting is not visible as the hubs are covered with the alloy wheels; however it shows with steel winter wheels.

Is it worth doing anything with these? If so what treatment is recommended?

Do you mean the hubs, or the disc hats? If you mean the disc hats, there's no real point in treating them, because even a standard coating will come off in 6 months or so.

Whip the wheels off, rub down and paint the bells with smooth Hammerite. It'll last a couple of winters - done my last two Golfs, looks 100% better!

I mean the projecting hubs (approx. 3" diameter) and the rear brake hubs as well.

Which is about half the size of a disc hat, and significantly bigger than most wheel bearing dust caps. Sanding off, priming and painting dust caps is perfectly possible if it bothers you though.

They get hot, it burns the paint off, salt gets on them, they go rusty.

Perfectly normal and not a warranty issue.

As said Smoothrite works for a while, or you can get expensive brake paint.

Personally wouldn't bother.
