Are potholes the new speed cameras?

Featured Replies

Just a thought, since cameras cost money to run, they can cut cameras and save even more money by not filling potholes......people would probably slow down more for potholes than a camera! And you can have a crappy road surface run for miles, not just one every 200 yards!

[sarcasm mode off] :p

I love potholes! :wonder: :giggle:

All seem to be on the apex of corners or roundabouts here, really unsettle the car and I'm dreading the day the tyre/rim gets caught.

I like it when they are "fixed" well they just make a mountain on top of them which is just as bad as the pothole.

I thought the speed humps around my way were just bad pot hole repairs until they painted them ;)

I'm fed up of potholes and the crappy road surfaces around here, even hanging back from the car infront my car gets pelted by chunks of road/gravel.

I once had the window down in the octavia on a dual carriageway off of a round about going up a hill.

A Audi comes flying past me in the right hand lane launching chunks of debrie up, one of them hitting the B pillar trim and twonking me in the side of the head before dropping in the foot well. Was really annoyed, it still didnt knock any sense into me :D

The octavia had a new windshield in it, and it was fine up until the start of winter. By January it was pebble dashed.

The mazda seems to have soft paint, which seems to have picked alot of road rash up in a matter of 400miles. And this is driving conservatively and keeping well away from the car infront.

Apart from these farts that drive at 20mph in every speed zone possible, where im stuck changing between 2nd and 3rd.

^ Really helped me - everything that I have reported has been fixed. I really hate potholes with such low profile tyres and large alloys.

I think you're right regarding the "Neglect" theory of speed control.

Anybody riding on low profiles and in sports/semi sports is obviously at more risk of tyre/suspension damage. Colleague in my office has had two blow-outs in as many years on a Toyota Celica and this has occurred within the boundaries of two different local authorities in the vicinity. I keep on telling him to claim but he won't.

Also, it would appear that some local authorities have a peculiar set of priorities regarding road repairs.

London Borough of Hillingdon seem to be exceptionally peculiar in this respect.

One fairly well-used surban B-road I travel on the regular commute, Joel street, Northwood is full of developing pot holes, cracks, surface slumps and minor subsidence. It is on a bus route. It has been in this state for sometime. But the road has remained unrepaired.Yet, the Authority have just constructed a zebra/belisha crossing, including 50 yards of new road noise abatement tarmac (French ? To hide the brake squeal !)each side of the crossing. Needless to say, the new crossing is at the bottom of a hill, on a semi-blind bend, where I can't ever recall having seen people attempting to cross en-mass i.e. ticking all the boxes (Not !) - IMHO you wouldn't cross there if you were sensible. I would estimate the cost of the crossing work as at least £50,000 - how many pot holes will that have filled ?

Meanwhile, other local authorities e.g. Harrow, still have money to build road humps etc on roads which are falling apart. Where's the back to basics and joined-upness in that ?

You've got all these apparent safety measures being implemented, including the farts driving everywhere @ 20 MPH, and then, on the other hand, people have to swerve every 100 yards in a zig-zag pattern (that would impress the navy) in order to avoid the road defects !!! Brillo.

No commonsense, all ecomentalist policy come what may.

Certain councils do seem to be fixing speed humps on roads that are more akin to the areas surrounding the trenches in Belgium following a heavy artillery shelling.

Are potholes the new speed cameras?
