Engine Temperature Sensor 52 Fabia 1.4MPI

Yeah, it's streaming out of that hole. I thought maybe It's a pressure release. If it's not meant to be, then it's clearly faulty but I need to figure a way of getting home with it. I could seal it up using some kind of substance.

Thanks so much for looking mate - my friend's dad has been out trying to source a replacement part for me but it has been fruitless.

What you need to do is get a video of it leaking as proof to show the dealer - Then gaffer tape should do the job.

Ok. Gaffer tape has been a good friend of mine over the years.

Got the part from jorily's eBay page and I imagine that I'm well within my rights to get a replacement. It's one of those things - such a rudimentary part, it either works or not.

Yeah, i'd think so.

Just a quick one - You did check that it's got a thermostat inside right? It's not something daft like the pin of the thermostat usually blocks a hole in that housings design there up?

Not that it was the case with my OEM housing, but y'know - keeping all the bases covered and that.

A metal length surrounded by a spring and held with two plastic clasps? Looks like the right one to me...

It worked fine for 80 miles though, that's the curious thing.

self tapper and some ptfe thread should hold it

Sounds like the pin in the stat punched a hole through the housing or something under pressure!

But def. not normal - and you're well within your rights in getting it replaced.

As for Jases suggestion - it'd work, but i'm betting it'd make your replacement claim questionable...

I just want to get home tomorrow! If someone suggested blu tak I'd give it a go.

Mate's dad is bemused by the gaffer tape idea.

Last thing you want to be doing is putting stuff in the hole, as like I said it might end up being questionable.

Gaffer tape has been used many a time by myself for a multitude of things... And if it's good enough to put around leaking hoses (and I know someone who put it on a puncture on their car tyre to get home!) To get back home shouldn't be too bad.

Make sure you're filled up to max - you'll not lose much as long as the tape stays on.

I'm sure under pressure the coolant would just seep through the adhesive on gaffer tape. I like the screw and PTFE idea but whether Jorily would be happy to replace it (presumably they would have to send it to their supplier and their supplier might question the damage). If you got there I'd be inclined to imagine you'll get back fine. Unfortunately I doubt any Skoda dealer in the country has these things on the shelf either, Trade Parts Specialist (TPS) would probably be the best bet.

Interestingly I just got a packet of Lidl crisps with a big chunk of uncooked potato in  . These things happen sadly.

So the hole should definitely not be there? Just to be categorically sure of that.

I could show you some pics i've taken of both the old and new units on my mpi - The old housing has a recess but it's not a hole. The new housing which I can only assume is a revision 2 part definitely has no hole.

Neither leak anything out of them!

Good enough for me. Thanks guys!

Right, Ive blocked the hole up but the engine is still overheating. I'm out of ideas!

Hold on - the hole is blocked and not leaking - is the thermostat open?

As a temporary measure - remove the stat from the housing. Your fuel economy will be crap, but it means that it'll constantly be registering as cold, or at least it should be - which means that it'll constantly be cooling the engine!

Second measure - remove the filler cap on your expansion tank and run the car through. Rev it up a little bit. It should release any airlocks experienced in the system. Should also prove/deny whether the water pump is working...

I've had to leave the car at my mate's house and borrow his car. So it is off to the garage tomorrow! Rubbish.

Sorry to hear it mate... It sounds to me a bit like the water pump isn't working or the thermostat is constantly closed if it's overheating...

If I'd had time today I'd have taken the stat out but I had to go home! Fingers crossed the mechanics can find out the crack. Cheers for the help.

Let us know what the diagnosis is, shame it wasn't a simpler fix!

Waiting to hear what the state of play is today. I returned home in a Golf lent to me by my mate's dad, it's nowt on my Furby.

Something got into my head last night that it could be head gasket. I only thought that because there is oil residue in the coolant that came out of the hoses while refitting the stat yesterday and when I open the oil cap there is mayo around the sides. However, the mayo could be caused by the fact that for the last month or so the car has been overcooling because of the original stat failure. This is why I hate taking it to the mechanics, because I'm powerless to have a try of things myself!

The mayo on the oil cap is just a design thing mate. The cap on the plastic engine cover doesn't sit entirely flush with the rocker cover - moisture gets in and condenses on it. I've been recommended to go pick up an old felly or favorit cap and remove the plastic engine cover altogether, which i'm inclined to do as soon as I have a rocker cover without a crack in!

There should be one of those caps pushed into the underside of the engine cover. That's the one I'm using. Felly or Fav 1.3 caps will fit perfect too though.

Yeah, unfortunately the seeming retards I bought mine off (at a bargain price of £600 1 year ago!) seem to have lost the spare cap.

If anyone does have a spare going though... Send it my way! :giggle:

Right, getting this info second hand through my mate's dad, who has been in touch with garage - blocked radiator is the diagnosis so far, they're flushing it out but they are concerned about oily residue in the coolant so they are suspecting HG failure at present. I could do without a HG failure like - god only knows how much that will cost!

A blocked radiator?

Doesn't sound like a blocked rad to me personally. water is flowing as you've seen it coming out the stat housing - it's a closed loop system. If it was blocked, nothing would be flowing I wouldn't have thought...

And as for the head gasket blowing - that's a possibility... But again it wouldn't cause the thermostat to be leaking.

Obviously they may have a better idea than me as they're looking at it in person - but sounds a bit to me like you're being taken to the cleaners mate. They've come out with 2 different answers so far and can't tie it down one way or the other!

I'd ask them to have the thermostat housing apart first and get them to confirm that it's working before they start going overkill, but then thats just my two penneth.

I aim to have them check EVERYTHING before deciding on a head gasket replacement. It's the last thing I need. Is the oily coolant not a by-product of the overcooling caused by the original broken stat? I don't know. I'm miles away from the garage but they are friends of my mate's family, didn't seem the type to rip me off.
