Cutting Out

Featured Replies

Hi, a few times over the last week or so the engine has cut out shortly after starting.

I think the engine was warm (ish) in all cases.

The glow plug light came on at the same time. Any ideas?

The car runs fine otherwise. :|

2005, vrs, asz.

Did it start straight away after cutting out or take a few turns of the key ?

Mine just randomly cut out a few weeks back not long after starting and has been fine since.

Yep, started straight away. The 2nd time it happened i was travelling at about 10mph, as the car was moving it started itself.

Ive disconnected and reconnected all connectors in the engine bay today, ill see how it goes. If it happens again ill try to get any codes from a scan.

Just thought id update just incase it may help anyone.

A few days after this post i couldnt start the car, took a few attempts. The car would start for a second or two then cut out. The glow plug light would flash on and off as it was doing this. Each time it was cutting out i could hear what sounded like an intermittent relay behind the dash.

I finally got it started and when home i thought i would investigate the relay panel (the trim under the steering wheel needs removing to access the relays).

I pulled each relay out and opened them carefully, then cleaned the contacts. Each one seemed ok except for the one marked 469, the contact was coated in what looked like carbon, i cleaned this off with a soft brush and finished with some IPA cleaning fluid.

Its been a week or more and the car starts fine first time. I hope this has solved it.

It could have also been a loose relay, however they all needed a good tug to remove.

Fingers crossed!
