Squeal when turning right

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got a squeal coming from the front off-side when turning right.

Anything more than a quarter-turn of the steering wheel will produce it and it happens at all speeds.

It is repetitive, but not with each revolution of the wheels so don't think it is linked to them, although I could be wrong. To me it sounds like a belt but I'm confused as to why it only happens when turning right. You would think that the force of turning might push something against something else but because it also happens even at very low speeds is why I'm confused.

Does anyone know of any common problems or does anything stand out as being a prime contender?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Adam

Go to a quiet car park and do slow left and right hand circles! This should show up the rotational aspect! could be pad to disc, or bearing, If it is done when the car is only doing right hand turn no matter the type of road eg potholes, then it could be a bearing due to the side (thrust) load on it. Also dip the clutch and put car into neutral when doing the circles as this will rule out gearbox/engine loads etc. If when doing the circles it goes squeek...squeek...squeek then defo disc/pad, if constant whine then most likly a bearing! if one side is going then other the side will follow shortly, best get both done at same time! No idea if its relevant to your car but my work van was making a squeal or whine by turning the wheel and it was the power steering fluid slightly low.

Jack the car up and spin the wheels by hand. You should be able to tell if the brakes are sticking. Could just be a sticky carrier on the calliper. Mine did it, but made a moooing noise then it started to squeal.

Also could be a warped disk.

Thanks for your replies,

Will have a ponder and sort something out.

Cheers,

check belts too... and yes, power steering fluid too.

Finally (!) checked the fluid today. It was a bit low so got some fluid from dealer and have topped up but the squeal is still there. A garage has already looked at the brakes and they are fine.

I don't want this to cost a lot, and it is an intermittent sound anyway so I might just put up with it. Until it goes proper wrong!

Hi there,

I'm from France and I noticed that since one month I have the same noise that you discribe...sort of wink wink wink when turning right or when keeping the cap lightly on the right....

Don't hesitate to post if you find when it comes and I will do so if I find anything.

regards

An be one of a few things, main thing to check are cv and wheel bearing! Don't just ignore the noise, I did that and ha to replace the cv joint, now have to do the trackrod end or ball joint. Just hope it's not the wheel bearing

I had exactly the same problem. My drivers side insdie pad was stuck in the carrier. 3 other pads would pretty much fall out when you took the calipers off but the other one took me 20min with a hammer and a drift to get it out. I cleaned up the metal pad holder thing, bent it out slightly, covered the thing in copper grease and its been fine ever since.

The pad was obviously not releasing itself off the disc properly and just getting really hot and squealing. Got a massive score mark on the inside of the disc too which is probably as a result of it.

Sure, will do!

Anyone know roughly how much should I expect to pay for each of these items if any of them are applicable?

Thanks for the help so far btw

About wheel bearing and so on, I hope it's not this, regarding the fact that the car has only 60000 kilometers....

I will check the pads shortly and put new one in place because when I receive the upgrade kit from ebay, I put the used pad which were given with the kit....

I'll let you know.
