Burning Clutch with high revs - any potential problems?

Featured Replies

Gents,

I just went to have some new tyres fitted to the Octy vRS (Pirelli P6000 powergy, 225/45 17" :D ) and I was asked to back up onto a pair of rubber blocks. To do so, I had to rev the engine quite hard (the blocks were behine the fronts, and square), which ended up in smoke coming from the front of the car, which is scary  .

Basically, I was told I'd burnt the clutch, could this have any long term effects on the car (see smoke coming from the stationary car was pretty scary for me)?

Thanks

Big Rich

it was because you were revving it very high and slipping the clutch, the smoke was becasue the clutch got very very hot. hopefully no damage done but i think only time will tell. in the future try bringing the clutch up only to get over obstacles and use the throttle to keep the engine from stalling rather than revving high, will be better on the car in the long run

I did something similar getting out of an awkward sloped drive - must've polished the clutch up nicely as i couldn't engage gear for a few minutes and then the bite point was really high for a couple of miles, no ill effects after that and more than 2000 miles later all still appears normal...so I would agree - no permanent damage.

I wouldn't worry too much if you have only managed to do this the once :) . You prolly managed to clean off the glaze from the friction surface - which is no bad thing!!!

As long as the biting point of the clutch is where it was originally and it is not slipping whilst under load (foot off the clutch) then I would suspect that you have just taken a couple of thousand miles off - rather than have burnt it out.

Thanks, guys.

Drove the car about 80 miles today, doesn't seem to be problem

Still, the smoke is pretty scary  ..... :D

Went to the seeing red festival at Donny last year and a rich plonker did the same reversing an F40 onto a trailer  , (reversing car up hill instead of turning trailer round and rolling car on  ) T'was the most expensive smoke I had smelt  and the car ended up rolling back off the trailer
