Featured Replies

Hello. Ive got a Fabia MPI 1.4

The car drives well.. But if i stop at a light or traffic the car idles bad.. Its only small jerking now and again nothing to bad.. Just wondering if this is a big problem?

Hi and welcome aboard.

Hi, welcome!

There's a Fabia sub forum here and the engines / mechanical forum might be worth asking too.

Does it get up to temperature ok? It's just dodgy temp sensors are common in VAG cars, although I don't know your engine so it might not be prone to these. When the ECU is falsely told the engine is colder than it is, it injects more fuel. That's fine when you've got some revs but at idle it'll be jerky.

The other one to check is for vacuum leaks, other engines in the VAG range can be prone to these and can produce bad idle - but normally also accompanied by revs running on after you release the throttle, or a high idle speed.

Hope this helps

The temp gage says its fine... Ive seen a few other posts where people have said its common for the fabia to do this..

Could it be, to do with the timing chain ?

Yeah you could get a horrible idle if the timing chain is stretched. I wouldn't worry about more severe things (they're rare in comparison) until the much more common small things that cause these symptoms are ruled out.

What are you planning to do with it? If you're taking it to an garage you've probably already got enough to go on so that they wont try to pull the wool over your eyes or fob you off.

If you're fixing it yourself i'd check if there are 2 temp senders - this is common on some engines - one sender feeds the temp gauge on the dashboard and one feeds the ECU. To check these you just run the car up to temperature, turn it off, disconnect the multiplugs from the back of both, then with your multimeter on resistance setting, compare the resistance of both - should be the same / very close values.

If you're planning on leaving it for now, assuming it's the temp sender, it wont cause too much of a problem other than the bad manners at idle. It will decrease fuel economy and it will eventually knacker the catalytic convertor (£300+ instead of ~£25 temp sender).

If it were me i'd try to figure out what's wrong and get it fixed. Might be worth searching on here, it'll have come up before. Others on here might be able to help also, failing that there's a basic troubleshooting section in the haynes manual or find a trust worthy local garage - if you can't find one, i'd go to a Skoda main dealer instead of chancing it with an unknown indy. Hope this helps!
