Stalling on 1.6tdi manual

Featured Replies

Many people have complained, I myself included, that it´s very easy to stall on start off on VW group models that have the 1.6 tdi engine.

The latest review on a 1.6tdi greenline with start/stop seems that this situation has been corrected.

The information given is that now the rpm is at 800rpm.

Well I also have corrected my RPM to 830rpm( thought the lowest was 750rpm)

and guess what, what a diference, totally dif. car. No more engine stalling.

I have now changed it 800rpm to see the effect.

830rpm works perfect, tested in the city of OPORTO.

I've got a same car as yours. Interested to know what you meant 'corrected RPM to 830rpm' and how you did it?

Via vagcom you can change the idling rpm.

Its under ENGINE-ADAPTATION-IDLE RPM CORRECTION

the value is " 0 " and all you have to do is add the number off rpms you want. EX. idling 780 and you want 800rpm, you put a value of " 20 ", for 830rpm you put a value of " 50 "

like said first had it at 830rpm and works perfect, but now testing only 800rpm.

idling rpm from stock is 780rpm.

I have the same engine and not had any issues with idle stalling..

Have you got a anything further that would reliably reproduce this issue, as to be honest, I'd say there was an issue with your engine and not the whole 1.6 tdi's in general. Unless I have the only non stalling 1.6.

Not saying that I always stall the thing, or anyone else within the VW group, lets say that many times you have to ride the clutch to take off ( or it will die) more than other models, especially if the terrain e inclined.

This issue is known within the VW group with the 1.6tdi manual( maybe on smaller models like the Fabia/Aolo/A1 or Ibiza, you won´t happen has often)

Alberg, how did your trials go, have you come to any conclusions over the past few months of driving?

I have purchased a 1.6tdi Octavia at the weekend and the first thing both myself and my wife found was how easily it stalls in first from a stand still and also in second on a rolling start (coming up to a junction etc).

I have a 1.9tdi (old model) which will on flat drive itself through 1st to 5th no problem on the idle. Also, my wife had a 1.4 petrol golf which didn't stall where the octavia does and would roll of in second from idle revs no problem. Surely a Diesel should have the torque to prevent it stalling low down!!!

I donnot know about latest octavias but until end 2010, the RPM was 780. I altered on several Octavias and gave instructions on Golf owners to do the same.

We all have it at 800rpm and we notice a big diference. If this still stalls easy ( I find having the clutch go slower with/without accelerating it won´t stall) you could raise them to 805/810/815/820 and so on until a good compromise.

Since I donnot live in the city I donnot need them to be highter than 800/805.

Greenline versions because of the start/stop system does not stall as non greenline versions.
