Mysterious knocking - any ideas?

Featured Replies

I've a knocking sound coming from the nearside front of my truck. Had this knocking for ages, but it only seems evident when the truck is cold and driving off my estate. After 5 mins or so of driving its gone. The truck is lowered. I have replaced the N/S driveshaft so it aint that. The anti roll bar is all as it should be. My mate suggested an engine mount rubber, but all on the N/S seems to be in order. The central one which is attatched to the gearbox casing seems a bit knackered but I cant see any sign of metal against metal clonking (This ones in the middle and surely would sound like the middle rather than the N/S?). Surely an engine mount rubber would make a knocking sound all the time, not just when its cold?

one thing I thought it might be is the splined bit where the c/v joint fits into the hub worn, again this would surely knock all the time and not just for the first 5 mins or so of driving.

Any ideas gentlemen?

first thing id look at is lower ball joint

i'd like to wager it's the exhaust joint clamp from the centre to rear boxes knocking on the rear brake bias valve

Would either of these things stop after 5 or so minutes, once warmed up? Either way I shall investigate both. Thanks heaps fellas

Hi There,

Does the knocking go away when you brake? Reason I ask is that my Felicia developed an annoying knocking rattle when going over bumps in the road. Sounded for all the world like knackered anti-roll bar bushes - only it aint got one! Turned out to be the mounting cradle for the offside disc caliper which had come loose from the hub. I was convinced it was coming from the driveshaft inner or outer cv joints and that lead me completely up the wrong avenue. Only when jacking up the wheel and runing it in gear did the true culprit come clean.

It would appear it has much to do with heat. I got in the truck after a sweltering day and no knocking whatsoever. Even when trying to. Most confusing! Have checked the brake caliper and all seems normal.

My son had a clunking from his n/s front, it turned out to be the bolt on the top of the shock was a little loose. I cant see why heat would make a difference, unless the rubber gromit was worn, but that is all I have as a suggestion (sorry)

Thanks, checked the nuts on the damper-all fine. Still clunking when 'cold'!

i still think it's the exhaust

I'm thinking you're probably right, I'm gonna have a fettle with thr truck today. Is there anything I can do about it, or should I just leave it and live withthe knocking?
