Air conditioning - it's started working again!

Featured Replies

Hi

The air con on my Octavia has not been working properly for months so we got it regassed about 6 weeks ago.

It worked for about 3 weeks and then stopped again. We took it back to the garage and they have found no leaks, no error codes, all the wiring is ok, but the hi-low readings (whatever these are) were the same so they suggested we need a new compressor/dryer and valve etc. As it would cost a lot we were having a think about it and were probably going to use the windows instead!

But today on one of the hottest days of the year it has suddenly started working and pumping out lots of lovely cool air.

Anyone had a similar fault with their car and found out what the problem was as I'd love to know why mine has started working again.

If the high-side and low-side readings are the same, then the compressor is not running. Given that the a/c is now working, it is unlikely that the compressor is faulty - it just isn't running

You should check the following.

Check the nut on magnetic clutch is tight. The nut should rotate with the clutch plate inside the a/c compressor pulley.

It is very common for the wires to become brittle at the 4-pin connector that fits in the bracket above the starter motor.

Check both radiator fans are both running

same happened to me it worked intermittently for a few months so i had a guy round to do a service on it he did a re charge but the pressure on the high side was dropping, he said my pump was knackered and it would cost me around 450quid to have new one fitted so i figured i would wait and save up. but after a few weeks of tuning it off and on it started working again and has been fine since

Thanks for your replies. An independent air con technican came out at the weekend. His view was that the compressor was fine, the valve was probably sticking but until it stops working again don't do anything. Fingers crossed it will work for another few years without going wrong again.
