Spring assisters

Featured Replies

Hi all, Whilst towing despite keeping the hitch weight below 75kg and trying to keep my caravan weight as evenly distributed as possible the rear suspension of my Superb is really low and the caravan always looks nose heavy,

I've been contemplating using the rubber spring assisters that fit between the coils as my Dad has always used them with no problems and swears by them,

I had 2 new rear tyres today so took the opportunity to measure the distance between the coils which was 45mm, but what I am unsure of is the rear springs are quite short and have about 3 main coils to them before tapering down to the small end coils, it looks to me if I fit the spring assisters they will take up quite alot of the spring, I have looked on a Passat forum where quite a lot of Passat owners have fitted them with good reports but was wondering if anyone one here has got any exerience in using them?

Cheers all.

You could replace the rear springs and get the heavy duty suspension ones. They're longer but similar spring rate, so the rear sits 20mm higher than stock.

I have my car set up with HD springs rear (+20mm, and sport springs front (-20mm). This way when the car boot is full and a 70kg towbar carrier is mounted, the car is about level. Higher rear improves roadholding at speed and reduces drag with caravan.

Or get the towing springs, but with these comfort suffers. Comfort will definitely suffer with spring assisters.

Replacing rear springs is 15min job, and you only need to do it once.

Hi,

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

I am also looking to make some changes to my 2003 Superb to improve its towing "sag".

By spring assisters, do people mean

http://www.just-tow.co.uk/trailer-parts/spring-assisters.html

or

http://www.mad-suspension.co.uk/Progressive.php?vehicle_id=1835&make_id=28&year=2003&model=Superb 1.9TDI

the best price I can find for HD springs is

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Superb-1-9-Tdi-z-Rear-HD-Suspension-Coil-Spring-/380361248990?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item588f4c10de

Does anyone think this is a sensible price?

Many thanks

Matthew
