Steering Vibration problem

Featured Replies

Got new inner and out boots put on the p/s driveshaft fitted using genuine parts - within 10 miles of motorway driving there is a real high frequency vibration through the steering wheel which is really really irritating. So I think it needs a four wheels allignment and balance to dial it out - nope made no difference so I am thinking does the drive shaft need balanced or am I missing soemthing? Thanks for any help.

Take it back and get them to check its in right, its a small possibility that its no locked into the gearbox correctly, or they have not tightened some of the nuts up

Is the driveshaft still tight in at both ends and located in the hub OK and still to the correct torque? Sounds a bit like something wasn't located properly if it started after 10 minutes and it has now worked loose.

Thanks for the reply - it is a dsg box and take up seems to be the same and changing is as smooth as ever its just the constant high frequency vibration and also a very slight clicking when put on full lock, maybe it is the cv joint itself?

Clicking on full lock = problem with CV joint

Sounds like the drive shaft is not located in to the CV joint correctly, or even worse, there is no grease in it! Wouldn't be the first time a garage has refitted a CV joint and not packed it with grease!

Either way, driving it will be damaging it.

Get it back sharpish and insist on being there when they take it apart again. If they haven't greased it then you need a new CV joint as it will be toast.

My guess is that the circlip hasn't located correctly and the driveshaft is not locked in to place.

Was this a main dealer or an indie garage?

I will take it back to the indie I used the only issue is there is 900 miles between me and him as we are currently in France but the question remains does a driveshaft need balanced on an octi?

Wouldn't know if it needs balancing, but I have replaced plenty of CV boots and never had to worry about balancing driveshafts before. On FWD cars the driveshafts are quite short compared to a RWD, so unless you have suffered from some damage to the driveshaft I can't see why it would need balancing. If your driveshaft is damaged it needs replacing.

I know this sounds daft, but have you checked the brake discs aren't warped? You get some very odd vibrations with a warped brake disc, and you will be able to feel it badly under braking?

If you are getting clicking on full lock then that is almost certainly a CV joint issue. Can you jack the car up and see if you can feel any play in the wheel bearing or CV joint - if you can feel play in the wheel and it goes away if an assistant brakes then you have a wheel bearing issue (or a CV joint not tightened in to the hub and bearing fully).
