1.2tsi weight?

Featured Replies

How light is it, not how heavy?.

Why do i ask?.

I test drove the latest vw touran yesterday, it had the 7-dsg and the 1.4tsi twincharge engine, the touran is supposed to weigh under 1500kgs.

When i got into the car i was expecting a fairly rapid machine................ nope, it was VERY flat and had no pull, just smooth and lazy.

By comparison my 1.2tsi Yeti feels alot more faster and manic, also handles lighter too.

So what gives, how can my heavy 1.2 be faster than a similar weight car with lower ride height and a engine from a fabia RS?.

I was so bitterly dissapointed by its performance, i couldn't accept that this car was slower, on paper it should kill my Yeti.

I even badgered the sales staff about whether they put high octane fuel in (they did) so i left even more confused.

Pulled out in my yeti and was reminded how much quicker my car was

So the only thing i can think that would make sense, is if the Yeti is about 1300kgs and the Touran is 1500kgs or more.

I can only find info about the Yeti saying its 1450kgs, no way 50kgs in the Touran blunted the performance that much.

:S

Kerb weight - 1340kg That's for the manual. DSG is 1370kg according to Skoda UK.

Under performance on the skoda website.

Nice one

So 150kg makes a much more powerful engine slower?.

I would of thought about 250kg or more would be needed.

Reading the specs of the touran it makes 140bhp and 160ft-lb of torque, which isnt a drastic increase in power i guess?.

Must say my car has lag and a kick when the turbo kicks in, but the touran was as smooth as silk...... gearbox was smoother too.

Its not just the kick and manic feel, but when i need to over take in the touran, it just had no power, it just sort of shuffled along at its own pace even when in S mode.

DO i have a 1.2 that's had a fire cracker stuffed inside by a rogue engineer one day at the factory, or is the touran heavy enough to blunt the performance of a powerful engine?.

You need to work out "bhp per tonne" and also look at the torque IMO.

But it's also how the car handles and feels. It may be slower but feel faster...

Our 1.2 DSG feels very light, nippy and has great acceleration under 50mph. But that's just how it feels.

In reality it's not that fast at all. Nearly 12 seconds to 100kph is actually quite slow. But it's fun to drive because it doesn't feel as slow as the figures suggest.

Thats the thing, i have timed mine at 8.2-9.0 seconds on many occasions, i even made a video about it :S

Go test yours, i think you will find VW tell porky pies about the performance.

The touran had a quicker take off from idle but once it hit 2nd gear it was definitely slower than the Yeti, overtaking and high speed acceleration was also less substantial........ its really weird.

I just saw your video on Youtube, and I'm impressed with acceleration of your 1.2!!

My 1.2 is more like 12s to 100km/h (manual).

Wait, its even faster than my 1.4!

Are you sure the touran gets the twincharge 1.4 engine? If so im surprised the car felt so flat tbh! Over here I think it has the turbocharged 1.4 as an option.

Yep 140bhp version.

Smooth as silk with no lag of any kind, but no top end or torque..... just FLAT like a pancake.

Same gearbox and same ratios as my Yeti, but it did not pull through the gears as quick or have the top end pull like the little 1.2!.

I am so curious right now i am considering chopping in the Yeti for a Fabia combi with the same engine/gearbox, since thats 200kgs lighter than the yeti............ must go like a rocket.

Might test drive a fabia today, i swear to god if its slower than my yeti i am going to a dyno and making some videos as something aint right :o

The fabia is quicker, even the 1.2 that I tried with just 1600 miles on the clock felt nippier.

When you said it had the same engine as the vrs I assumed you meant the full on 180ps unit! What you say re performance doesn't seem to far off what id expect then tbh.

Regardless tiguan bhp,

8.3s to 100 for 1.2 Yeti is something that heavily remaped Yeti cannot do :)

This was extensively discussed in the thread this was first mentioned. Quite impossible to do that from a mildly fettled, or even heavily fettled 1,2 I'd think...

If you were to drive these two cars next to each other I think you'll find the Tiguan might show you a clean pair of heals. Yours just feels faster or sound faster I'd suggest. They should be pretty even if your 1,2 has been tuned a bit.

Everyone seems to assume that the 1.2 is slow, i assumed the same thing myself, but after owning mine for 7 months i can assure you its not at all what they describe in the specs.

Im going to test drive a fabia tsi today, will report back with my findings.

I test drove a 1,2 DSG and it felt every bit as slow as its 12 second 0-60 would suggest.

I guess this statements depends on what you are used to driving. To be honest, I thought the 1.2 was underpowered (Im trying not to use the word 'slow') :giggle: in the Yeti. Its nippy but Id never call it fast. Then again, I wouldnt really call my 1.8TSi particulalry fast either! If I was looking to use the car only around town without extended long distance trips and didnt need the 4wd drivetrain then I would probably consider the 1.2TSi Yeti. :)

Exactly.

It feels quite good after my Fabia Greenline with it's little 1.2 3cyl diesel engine. But not after the VRS with 270(ish)bhp. :giggle:

It's plenty fast enough for day to day driving and family car use with children aboard.

Which im guessing would be what 90% of the buyers are wanting from the 1.2TSi. :)

I was used to a 280bhp 350z powered saloon car......

I actually test drove a 1.8tsi octavia combi and it was quite rapid and had similar torque to my nissan.

Cant test drive the fabia, skoda have sold out until december!!!!!.

The car in the showroom is just for show only :(

I guess i will never really know?.

Don't know how much the Octy Combi weighs with the 1.2TSI engine but Autoexpress tested one last week and recorded 0-60 in under 10 seconds.
