modding std exhaust

Featured Replies

The exhaust on my vrs is blowing from the middle box, im thinking of removing it and replacing it with a straight through pipe and leaving the std backbox on. will this cause any problems? i dont mind the exhaust being louder as i think its too quiet as it is.

Secondly i was thinking about cutting the down pipe either side of the cat and replacing it with a straight through pipe as a cheaper alternative to a de cat pipe.

does this sound like a bad idea??

Straight pipe sounds OK. The lack of cat may well put the engine light on and of course youll fail the MOT

I would go for an after market exhaust rather than messing with pieces of pipe, try here Demon Tweeks or Euro car parts in the performance bit you will find something

i would love a nice after market exhaust but sadly money is a little tight at the min hence the diy fix.

no need to replace the cat as it really isnt a restriction in the exhaust system the bit before is the restrictive part so leave that bit.

i would look for a second hand centre section prob pick one up from breakers for £10 so much easier than cutting welding ect ect

I think its the other way round, The cat tends to be about 400 cell where as a sports cat are either 200 or even 100 cell

The standard downpipe is very narrow:

The cat itself isn't a restriction apparently but the above bit is.

trust me the cat isnt the restriction I KNOW FACT lol

p.s rob has a pic lol as normal good man rob hope all is well

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but if I put a larger bore (2.5" maybe) downpipe and maybe sport cat, could I graft it onto the standard exhaust and get similar characteristics to a blueflame of similar?

I know the stock exhaust isn't that restrictive, apart from the downpipe as Rob said.

I've got a spare sports cat ;)

lol, not gonna do it yet as I'm movin house.

More thinking out loud tbh. :D

Look on ebay there is a place selling centre sections for standard exhausts ready bent just fits to cat and backbox

U have a link for this???

Look up Hoffman racetube, its the same diameter as the OEM system.

When i replaced the standard exhaust system and cat for a de-cat and 2.5" jetex, the car seemed alot less laggy and alot more responsive.

i should hope so to, you have removed the restrictions allowing the exhaust gases to leave quicker

Erm....yer, that is why i bought a full system including larger diameter downpipe? lol...

yes :D (joking)

tbh if I were you i'd look for someone breaking a car and take the standard exhaust off it as it is decent quality part, not sure if stainless or not, but mine is 6 years old with virtually no corrosion.
