Amundsen to Columbus upgrade

Featured Replies

Hello,

I would need your help so that I won't make some mistakes..

I would like to get a SH Columbus unit for my Skoda Superb ( which is just 2 weeks old ). Now my car

is the Elegance version and it came with Amundsen, GSM-2 bluetooth, climatronic, maxidot and rear parking sensors.

I want to make sure if I would get a Columbus unit, all the functions will work like they are working now with the Amundsen.

( For example the BT phone works nicely showing up phonebook, caller identity..etc, the climatronic shows up

when changing settings and everyting is also in sync with the maxidot ).

Should this change from Amundsen to Columbus requires anything else than just plugging in the new unit?

LE: Forgot to mention that it's Amundsen+ the existing device. Anybody knows what are the difference between

the "+" version and normal one?

Amundsen+ is the new RNS-315, if I were you I would stick with it. It is not that bad and it is faster then the RNS-510. Also the BT if I am correct is Amundsen+ specific, so you have to change that also to work with a Columbus unit.

Amundsen = RNS-310

Amundsen+ = RNS-315

Ok.. pretty bad news then :)

I bought it already, I'm waiting for it today, hopefully I'll find somebody to dispose of it, if it won't work for me..

I am not saying it won't work, but there is a chance you will have to make some minor modification to the BT, others will work fine.

I installed today the Columbus unit and I have climatronic, steering wheel buttons and rear parking sensors working, but I have no bluetooth.

And I think the reason why I don't have BT is because it is integrated in the RNS315 (Amundsen+) unit.

I'm saying that because I have no 77 controller available in the CAN installed items ( I enabled it anyway just to see what happens, and I have

signal error that there is no communication to that module on the CAN gateway ).

Anyway coming to details I have the following info retrieved via the VCDS:

Columbus:

coding: 000004000001028100

c3t0 035 680

rns-mid h11 1164

imp: 790 wsc 73430

other info from hidden menu:

HW version: H11

SW version: 1164

SV SW version: C_EU_7.112.t1012

HW Vehicle: 0xC201

can gateway:

7n0 907 530 h

j533 gateway h42 1620

imp: 790 wsc 33361

Amundsen:

coding: 000004110404000000010002

3t0 035 193

imp: 790 wsc 33361

So anyway I'm continuing my quest to get the Columbus up and running. Could you please advise what Bluetooth module should I buy

to have a functional iphone with call log ?

I have found this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLUETOOTH-9W7-VW-RNS-510-7P6035730C-/160625638382?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item256608bbee#ht_500wt_1156

Thank you,

Teodor

Some others might help with the BT, I am unfamiliar with them. Check wiring also! If the BT is intagreted in the Amundsen then you need to do some wiring also! The BT box goes under the passanger seat (at least in my Octavia, don't know about where it goes in the Superb).

There are 2 types of BT (GSM II and GSM II Premium) for RNS510 that you can buy, one that works with every phone (GSM II) and there is another one(GSM II Premium) which doesn't work with all the phones but have total controll of your phone (shows your phone book on your maxidot, etc).

If you want to use Iphone, then I think you need just the GSM II. Premium wont work correctly with Iphone, but some others who has iphone should confirm this.

I looked under the passenger seat and couldn't find anything like that..

Anyway in the meantime I just bought from ebay the P/N: 7P6 035 730C . (9w7)

The sellers claims it is new but it has no cables ( he wants to sell additional cables and mic for 60 pounds.. seems quite a lot ).

I wonder if I already have a mic in place.. how can I check that? I think I ticked the mic check option in the long coding of the Columbus

and I didn't get a fault code..

Regarding the wiring I have no idea how to proceed further. If I get this 9w7 module ( which seems to have rsap and bluetooth audio..etc )

where do I connect it? ( first of all I'll have to find a physical place for it.. )

Excellent! Thanks for the info.. so I'll check for the mic and I'm sure that I don't have such module underneath the passenger seat. ( it also makes sense since there is no module connected to

the CAN gateway ).

Btw a different question:

I have found an info somewhere else that I should disable and physically disconnect some positioning sensor, because the Columbus has an integrated compass. Where this module

should be located? ( in some VWs I understood that it is in the trunk.. )

I looked under the passenger seat and couldn't find anything like that..

You need something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Bluetooth-Wiring-OEM-7P6035730C-7P6035730D-7P6-/170588943443?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item27b7e4b453 (which is slightly cheaper but not much)

In the octavia, if you remove the glovebox, it's then very easy to route the cables to get under the passenger seat. I used some self adhesive velcro to hold the box to the carpet.

In the meantime I just upgraded the FW to 2764.. apparently it's working fine, although I had one nice thing of starting a route from somewhere in Germany.. it didn't repeat however after several other tries.

I have the mic fit in.. i just used voice control successfully.

Any idea how to use kilometers instead of yards for voice control when asking for scale? Now it tells me to say yards :)

Althoug the units are show on the display in metric..

You can edit voice tags in Setup/Voice Control menu.

I have successfully completed the upgrade. I received today the 9w7 controller and with a simple coding of the CAN gateway plus the 77-telephone module everything works

smooth. I had to move the mic pins to new connector that came with the cable harness ( pin 1 and 7 on the left as depicted in the pin-out of the RNS-510 ).

It was pretty annoying to route the cables through the floor, but in the end everything looks fine. However my biggest struggle was to put the RNS-510 back

in its place. Because of the adapter of the cable harness there was no physical space behind the RNS to push it back in place. It took me 30 minutes

with the help of my wife to push the adapter somehow up and slide the RNS back. I wonder if there is a space problem only in my car with this adapter

or it's a generic thing..

Beside that I have phone book, call lists, bluetooth mediaplayer and also showing correctly on the maxidot.

There is one change however: the voice control it's not context sensitive, actually right now I can only control

the phone system. If I have the map displayed on, I cannot give commands related to the navigation.. it keeps on saying

all the options related to the phone ( and they work correctly), but for example I cannot set scale of the map, or starting

navigation..

It should though, you should be able to control pretty much everything by voice not just the phone.

I seem to remember when the voice activated FW came out that many people had to cut their mic cable and do some rewiring at the back of the Columbus, as the oem BT mic cable went straight to the BT module under the seat, and for the voice stuff to work needed the mic to be wired to the back of the columbus. I never updated my FW on that vehicle/columbus/BT setup and sold it all, so never looked into it, so the thread is on here somewhere, which might help.
