Goodbye Octavia, helloooo Superb!

Featured Replies

I collected my Steel Grey 1.8TSI SE Estate on Monday and so far am very impressed with it. I always thought the Octavia was a good car, but the comfort and refinement of the Superb is in a different league. One of my customers spotted my car this morning and thought it was a Mercedes, a neighbour thought it was a BMW. Of course, as soon as I said "no, it's a Skoda actually", they responded "well, Skoda is now a decent car.....just a VW really". Why do they think I had an Octavia for over 4 years?

Anyway, particular things I like about the car so far are:

1. Illuminated footwells

2. Touch screen stereo

3. Quiet and smooth petrol engine (light years ahead of the 2 litre PD diesel Octavia)

4. Excellent fuel economy

5. Folding mirrors

6. Lack of road noise and better ride compared with Octavia

7. Value for money. This is partly because I bought it with the 20% off deal, but even without this I think it compares favourably other marques

8. Despite being a large car, it feels no bigger to drive (or park) than the Octavia

When I have time I'll get some photos taken and posted.

I have a quick techie question: from reading the user guide, it seems the long life for this engine is the same as I bought for my 2.0 TD Octavia. Would someone be able to confirm this?

Thanks

Glen

Congratulations on your choice of car. I have also ordered a Steel Grey Estate, albeit, a Greenline SE.

My previous car was an Octy hatchback, so I know the difference in driving both cars.

I believe any Long Life oil certified to 507.00 (superceding 506.01) will be compatible. In reality, this means a choice of either Shell, Castrol or Fuchs.

It's worth buying a litre of Long Life oil for top-up purposes.

I am currently driving a petrol Octavia Combi SE whilst my Superb is having some warranty work done to it, a few comparisons I have noticed are:

3. The engine (1.6 MPI - 102PS) is pretty noisy, rough and gutless (compared to my CR - the gutless I can understand as it is giving away nearly 70bhp)

$. Economy is not too bad averaging 38mpg on the trip computer - I assume this reads 10% optimistic like most other Skoda's making a true reading closer to 34/35MPG, which is 10MPG (actual) down on my Superb.

6. Road noise is much louder in the Octavia, it doesn't soak up the bumps anywhere near as good as the Superb even though the Superb has 225/40/18's compared to the Octavia's 205/60/15's

The seat is also killing my back!

Having been the owner of a MK2 Superb and now running an Octavia vRS, I can confirm the Superb feels like a more refined car, and there are many things within the Superb that are just brilliant.

I got rid of my Superb due to water ingress issues, via the pollen filter, front door card and boot - I had a twin door, not a combi.

I have the same engine and gearbox combination as I had in my Superb (170 Bhp Diesel DSG), and it is just brilliant in my opinion.

Two days after picking up the car, a careless g*t was speeding towards me along a stretch of road very recently surfaced, half his car straddling what would be the centre lines and..... you've guessed it, after he passes, a stone smacks the windscreen and leaves a 20 mm diameter chip on the driver's side. Autoglass looked at the damage on Saturday and declared that a new windscreen was required, which they fitted today. Fortunately, I still love the car!

^^^ think yourself lucky it's not a heated screen, I have been waiting 2 weeks (tomorrow) for Autoglass to get a heated screen in! emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I have to say I was impressed with Autoglass - they came to my home on Saturday at about 12.30 (having been booked between 12 and 3) to see if they could repair the chip and when they saw its size and location, rang their office to get a screen ordered for fitting on Tuesday. The technician ensured they ordered the correct screen as I believe the facelift version is slightly different. A different technician arrived at my customers on Tuesday (where I was working), again promptly and fitted the new screen in about 30 minutes. And for a change, no dirty finger-marks left on the A pillar trim! Here's hoping you get your screen soon....

Well there are at least two Superb screens in the Autoglass's 'system' now - both for auto wipers/lights etc, just not heated!

Phoned them today and still no screen in FFS!

How hard can it be??

If there is a shortage of heated front screens, this could explain the delay in delivery of my Superb, since that is one of the option boxes I ticked.

I hope not. My CR170 DSG Elegance Estate has been build-week 35 for the last two months and that's just over three weeks away. I was contacted by my dealer yesterday who confirmed there was no change. My options include the Heated Front Screen. I'm guessing the shortage lies with Autoglass and not Skoda.

Glad you're enjoying the new Superb Glen.

Time to update your car profile info though ;)

Autoglass do not not make a heated screen for the Superb - they all have to be ordered through Skoda, I have been told by Autoglass this is where the problem lies .

Nothing like stating the obvious as Autoglass are a third-party supplier/fitter and not a manufacturer.

I was responding to Farmerjim's concern about Autoglass' lack of supply (from Skoda, as you say) not reflecting as a delay in Skoda's build time for cars with that option.

Almost Snap

just got my blue SE estate last week and already done nearly 2000 miles as we live in Italy but bought in the UK because of the enormous price benefit of buying in the UK. Never had cruise control before but it was a delight on the long motorway runs.

I previously had an Octavia Elegance 4x4 estate but the Superb is a completely different level of refinement.
