Air condition problem

Featured Replies

We have a new Skoda Superb 2011, on warm days after turning off and starting the car again after several minutes the air conditioner works but doesn't cool (there is an exit of air that is not cold).

Is there some kind of delay which prevent the compressor to start working?

Does someone know the problem?, and if so what can be done about it?

Thanks.

I believe there may be a delay, but only perhaps for the first minute after initially starting. I have mine set to Auto and 19 degrees. On a hot day, there is little output for the first minute and then all hell breaks loose as the system kicks in :)

Many thanks for your comment, but the delay is much more longer - about 5 minutes or even more. Do you have any other idea?

Depending on how hot the car is the AC won't appear to be cooling straight away due to the high ambient temps it has to cool. Several minutes after operation begins the air coming out of the vents should feel cooler but it will be a a bit longer before this has any noticeable effect on the interior temp. I open all windows for a minute or two while driving so all the hot air is flushed out so the AC can deal with it better. It may also pay to recirculate the air within the vehicle for increased cooling.

The main problem is that this is something that happaned sometimes and not always.

I'm aware to that in a hot day it will take few minutes and I also open the windows.

But there is a problem and the blower / fan only (without cooling) is working and after 5-10 minutes the compressor start to work and a cold air starting to flow.

The company replaced the compressor twice but we still face the problem.

I thought that somebody faced such a problem. I bellieve it is related to pressure switch somewhere or any other "delay componenet / timer" that may protect the system - but has some failure.

Tx

That is better explained and now understood. It could be a number of things, head pressure in the compressor too high, TX valve going on strike or maybe the temp sensor not working at elevated temps. If I were fixing it I would want the car for a couple of days to sort it out if that became necessary due to an obscure fault. Beyond that I have no idea and always beware of experts on internet forums. The problem in the UK (you are there?) I would think is the lack of experience in AC where as in Australia we have vast experience.

Thanks for your reply.

We are in Israel, hot weather, and in general there is an experience with AC systems.

But this is quite a complicated one.

You gave some ideas and I will ask to check those elements.

Many thanks

I am in Australia and have the same problem with a 12 2009 plated superb II, 54000km. I bought the car in March 2011 and so through winter didn't really test the Aircon though I run it most of the time for dehumidifying the cabin. I also drive mostly long trips.

As summer approached the air con (cooling) would take up to 20 minutes to cut in. Until then it was venting what seemed to be 'warmed' air relative to outside air temperature.

Of course the service centre couldn't fault it and on a trip to Brisbane (1700km return) last weekend the air didn't work at all. This time I got the attention of the service centre.

First analysis was a faulty High pressure sensor which apparently has the ability to shut the compressor down if it's not happy. Ordered, replaced next day. System worked on testing for less than a minute. Further testing revealed compressor failure. Replacement on order from Singapore. ETA 10 days. (Turns out it was 2 weeks being fitted next week)

Will keep you posted.

Trip to Albury next two days (1100km return) with forecast highs of 28 degrees AAgh!

BTW, I'm luving the drive, too bad about expecting to be comfortable as well!!!! :)

Update 4 weeks later. Air con Compressor replaced under warranty. Instant air on startup.... nice!

Hi Folks,

I had the same a/c delay problem until yesterday. Got my Superb II TDI 170 DSG to the shop and they replaced the compressor under "grace" warranty (we only get 2 year "real" warranty here in Israel), which meant they paid for only 70% of the parts, leaving me with 30% of the parts and the labor costs.

Now, reading this thread:http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=254699&page=8

seems that only a valve (RCV) on the compressor needed to be replaced.

So:

1) Anybody else experiencing delayed cooling: be smarter...

2) Would you go back to the shop and re-open the case?
