Cylider Head Problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 1996 (1.3 - Carburetor) Felicia had some time mixing the oil and the coolant (noticed that the coolant reservoir had a lot of oil in it). Well some research lead me to the conclusion that the cylinder head gasket was damaged and, after postponing that painful job for awhile, yesterday I start to unmount the cylinder head.

On the way, one of the bolts just broke, and another got out with the head very damaged (not before having me almost 1/2 a day working on it).

The Cylinder Gasket and the Manifold gasket are both damaged (I bought both of them) but I have a few questions now:

- Is there an EASY WAY to know if the cylinder head have some damage too?

- Can I Mount it back without the broken bolt?

- Would I have to Work on the valve calibration?

thanks..

1) Head damage can only be assessed with careful measurement. At best you will need a true straight edge to measure with, but it's most likely you'll need to get it skimmed to be sure. Certainly most of the secondhand heads I've come across (about 20, I guess) have had some corrosion and benefitted from being skimmed to get a good surface.

2) Depends on the bolt, but not really in any case - there aren't any that are redundant. Let us know which one is broken.

3) Yes. The head will have moved in relation to the bottom end of the engine so the clearances will need to be done. It's not a big job, and easy enough to do...

Hi, Thanks For Your Answer!!!

1- Well, As I have some urgency in getting my car running back again, and it has turned a little difficult to get anther one right now, I plan to do some -TINGO- and mount this one as is. Latter (after finish a work project I should Start on Monday) I'm seriously thinking about an engine transplant, and maybe to an Automatic - fuel injection (the one I have now is Mechanic and carburetor) maybe a fabia's or a honda logo's engine. Do you have any good suggestion about that?

2- I actually don't have a picture of the real thing but, I did a "draw" to kinda Illustrate the Bolt that got broken

3- Where/how can I get reference/orientation to do that clearances?

thanks a lot.....

That is a head bolt - there is NO WAY you will get away without it, you will need to replace it.

I don't mean to be rude, but if you're asking questions like that it seems unlikely that you'll be able to perform an engine transplant of a different type of engine/gearbox - there are a LOT of challenges in such a conversion. Check out TeflonTom's 16v AFH conversion somewhere in this forum for the simpest engine change conversion you could ever get.

There is info on the clearances on here somewhere - check out the search on here, it's been asked before.

hi, thanks for answering...

I already got a soldering guy to get the left bolt out, and I'm looking for new bolts set.

The transplant is just a though, and I know is a big challenge.. But if I get to do it, it's very very possible that I'll do it my self (even If I have to get some help for mayor issues) but that is kind of things I like to do myself, to be sure things are done as they should be. Here where I live (Dominican Republic) service man like to bypass many things to do all fast and cash-out.

thanks a lot.
