Splitting headlamps

Featured Replies

does anyone know of the best way of splitting headlamps to access the reflectors and adjustment bits without breaking the glass? not actually skoda but a mk3 golf. they're sealed up with some kind of silicon. thought i'd be able to cut it with a knife and simple pull the unit apart but the silicon is in a recess.

is there any solvents that would disolve the silicon without affecting the plastic?

Cheers, R.

why out of interest

Silicon sealant remover softens sealant allowing it to be scraped away, but you do have to apply it directly to the surface of the sealant - and that isn't possible in your case by the sound of it.

How about warming it in an oven for a short while? I know the Gen 3 Hyanddry Coupe owners do this, to get access so they can make their orange corners clear.

i got them sent in the post and because of royal mails harsh treatment despite the fragile sign, one the the adjustment posts is broken. i need to glue it back together so i can use them.

As I said heat 'em in the oven to split them, do what ever it is you need to do, then stick 'em back to gether and use some silicone sealer or summit.
