Octavia 1600cc estate bought in April 2011. Clutch failed at end of july after only 5700 miles! Previous Octavia (traded-in April 2011) did well over 100,000 miles with no clutch problem. Severe slippage diagnosed but no slippage noticed before failure.

Sounds very similar. We had noticed two minor "smells" before the complete clutch failure but in each of these two cases there was not any noticeable slippage or change in the clutch pedal function. Car is currently in Edinburgh where the engineers are "investigating" the cause. Initially we were accused of "gross abuse" of the clutch but a slightly more flexible attitude was adopted when I informed them that I was sn engineer!

My 1.6tdi has over 26k in one year and no such issue.
