3 Years Old Soon!

Featured Replies

My Octy vRS CR TDI is 3 years old in October. As part of the service thingy that Skoda UK do I've already paid for this (3yr, 30k) service which I believe is a minor one.

I don't know if it's just me but going from year 2 to year 4 with just a minor service on a car thats that age doesn't seem enough, which is also why I chose fixed servicing. Leaving a car up to 2 years before anyone looks at it seems lunacy to me!

I've always tried to look after cars and be proactive in work done rather than wait until something goes before getting it replaced so I've been thinking that after 3 years, whats worth getting checked/realigned/refreshed that isn't part of a service.

So far all I can think of that I'll prob get done is;

1, Camber check/adjust (After 3 years, 25k it ideally should be checked???)

2, Air Con checked (It works perfectly, worth doing???)

Is it also 'common' to ask the dealer to give it a good check/scan during service for any faults before the warranty runs out?

Certainly get the A/C checked as it's expensive if it goes wrong.

Also worth asking them to check the EGR system & DPF etc if it's not too expensive.

The dealer should do a fault scan anyway as part of the service so that's one sorted. They should also check that everything's mechanically sound so anything wrong or wearing will (or should) show up and then you can take care of it.

As for camber check/adjust, are your tyres wearing quicker on one side than the other? Does the steering wheel shake at speed? Are there any knocks or rattles from ball joints/bearings/engine? I'm guessing none of these apply so an oil/air filter/pollen filter change and full check, should all be done and should be enough.

Most people get a brake fluid change every two years if driven normally, and possibly every year if driven hard. Your cambelt's not due for another year or 35k miles so no worries there either.

I honestly wouldn't stress too much about it, although I've never bought a showroom new car so maybe I'd feel different if I had, but I always get a full service, with all fluids, every two years, and a basic service with oil change and air/pollen filter every year and I only do about 8k a year. These car's are pretty solid and as long as you're getting the oil changed regularly it should be fine.

Hope this helps. Now wait for the experts to shoot me down in flames :)

I forgot about the DPF. Depends how you drive I suppose but 25k in 3 years doesn't sound like mad motorway mile munching, which is best for maintaining a clean DPF, so wouldn't hurt to check it.

Most of my driving is A-Road/Town but every couple of months I go visit the parents in Essex (I'm in W Yorks) so it gets a 500 mile road trip run 5 times a year ish.

Isn't the CRTDI DPF only a partial one and not as prone to the common probs? Would I just ask the dealer to check it at service or is there something specific?

Cheers.

FWIW, it's worth getting the MOT done 28days before the three years, so that the warranty is still covering it.

IIRC you can do it up to 28 days before it's due and the MOT keeps the previous date. Any more and it's the test date for a year.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Certainly my VRS went from 3-4yr with no change at all and I've done nothing other than routine servicing.

The tip about getting the MOT done before your warranty is up is a good one.
