can anyone give me advice on what the "tow bar prepartion" all about. We've order our yeti without it because we have always fitted towbars to our cars at well known local company because of prices quoted

Although I believe the Skoda/VW Tow bar installation and pricing is a ripoff, you need to get it right as you will have problems otherwise.

The towing preparation on my Yeti consisted of wiring from the dashboard fuse box to the back bumber including the relay/busbar box and a connector. Also the bumper hole had been cut and cover fitted. The rest was installed by a dealer, a simple job but more wiring required but just plugged into the already installed plug. You also need a download to the cambus system to tell it a towbar is fitted as it affects the braking/ ESP/ reversing sensors and Radio display panel. Going the Skoda route will lighten your pocket by £750 to £800 in total.(that was me), I now know a lot of short cuts too late.

The alternatives are, have an aftermarket system fitted save some cash and hope that they got it right or buy the parts and do it yourself. If you don't have the preparation done at delivery the seats and carpet will need shifting to run a cable to the fuse box when you have an aftermarket tow kit fitted, extra cost. Breaking into the electrical harness, (the old way), to make connections will be frought with danger as you could cause Cambus damage. Finally I have heard, but not seen, a fixed towkit which can be fitted and does not affect the reversing sensors(cheaper). You can have the towkit download from a dealer for about £40.

Good luck,

I got my Yeti with a factory installed, Westfalia detachable towbar. The decision for taking the factory installed version was made after comparing the price to a retrofit version - at least here the retrofit version was considerably more expensive. The fitter told the reason to be the extensive wiring work which is easier to do while the car is still "naked" at the factory.

If you need closer info on the said hook you can follof this link - http://www.westfalia-automotive.de/index.php?id=54&L=1 - that should giove you a good view of the work amount involved.

Unfortunately that link does not seem to work as supposed - you can also go to Westfalia product finder and look for order number 317105600001
