Turbo whistle after egr delete at idle.

Featured Replies

I recently had the pleasure of having my vRS remapped and the EGR deleted resulting in a fantastic improvement in performance and driveability for such a modest car. I have noticed a change in the vehicle sounds at idle since this work was done and wanted some reassurance that it is normal and not a sign of impending problems.

At start up and any subsequent engine idle regardless of engine temperature there is a noticeable turbo whistle. It sounds fine, no funny noises or adverse engine noises - just the normal sound of a turbo spinning but I don't remember hearing it at idle before this work was done.

I don't have much mechanical knowledge but to my mind it could be the result of either i( the egr delete allowing more exhaust flow at idle therefore spinning the turbo where before there was insufficient flow to spin the turbo enough to make it audible or ii) the remap is spinning up the turbo earlier to minimise lag etc from the engine.

The work was carried out by a site sponsor and I was very impressed by their work and prices - I don't think it is anything to be unduly concerned about but if anyone can put my mind at rest or suggest an alternative mechanism for this to be happening then please let me know.

Whilst having the work done they were working on a golf turbo which was leaking air from somewhere - the noise was a hissing air sound, not a turbo whistle sound so I am 99% certain it is not a boost leak or anything like that. The cars acceleration and performance is spot on to my mind and there is virtually zero smoke from the exhaust at any time, even during full throttle after spending a long time in town traffic.

Thank you in advance for any help

Steve

Hi.

This is quite normal for an egr delete. You're not drawing through any exhaust gas any more and the slight increase in fresh air is enough to produce a slight whistle.

Usually doesn't do it straight away, but if the car is sat idling you can hear the noise appear and then disappear as you rev the engine.

Nothing to worry about :)

Thank you for your information Kev, It's great to know it's nothing to be concerned about since I really quite like the noise.

When I was looking last night for information I came across

which really is a crazy amount of noise! I could not imagine putting up with that noise day to day - I think I would do deaf!

Steve.
